ΔE is how far apart two colors are (CIEDE2000): under 1 you cannot see a difference, under 3 they look the same on a wall, over 6 they are different colors. A screen shows each brand's digital version of a paint, so check a real chip, or have the store mix a sample, before you buy. We are not connected to any of these brands.

Quick answer: no paint brand publishes an official conversion to another brand’s colors, so the converter finds the closest color by measurement: it compares the brand’s own digital color with every Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore and Behr color by CIEDE2000, the color-difference formula the paint industry uses. For example, Sherwin-Williams Agreeable Gray (SW 7029) is closest to Benjamin Moore 859 Collingwood (ΔE 0.8) and Behr HDC-NT-20 Cotton Grey (ΔE 0.6). Type any code or name above. Under 1 ΔE you cannot see the difference; check a real chip before you buy.

How to use the paint color converter

  1. Type a code or a name. A Sherwin-Williams code (SW 7029, or just 7029), a Benjamin Moore code (OC-17, HC-154, 2134-30) or a Behr code (PPU24-18), or a color name such as White Dove. Spaces, dashes and capitals do not matter.
  2. Pick the color you mean. Several brands use the same name: there is an Alabaster at Sherwin-Williams and two at Benjamin Moore. The list shows the brand and code of each; tap yours. A full code answers at once.
  3. Read the matches. For each of the other two brands you get its three closest colors, nearest first, each with its ΔE, what that means, and its LRV (how much light it reflects).
  4. Check it on a wall. See it on a wall opens the room paint visualizer in that color, so you can try it on a photo of your room. Then buy a sample.

No code to hand, only a photo of the color? The free paint color matcher reads it off the photo and names the closest paint at all three brands.

How the match works

Every paint brand publishes a digital version of each of its colors, a screen color that stands in for the paint. The converter uses the files the three brands offer free to designers: Sherwin-Williams’ ColorSnap palette (1,526 colors, file dated 2021), Benjamin Moore’s ten palette collections (4,056 colors, dated 2016 to 2020) and the Behr Color Library (1,808 colors, dated 2020). A color added after those dates, or left out of a file, is not in the converter.

It then measures how far apart two colors look with CIEDE2000 (ΔE), the formula paint and print makers use because it follows how the eye sees, not just how far apart the numbers are. The converter reads the result in four bands:

  • Under 1: identical. You cannot see a difference side by side.
  • 1 to 3: very close. Side by side you may spot it; on a wall on its own, it reads the same.
  • 3 to 6: close. The same family of color, visibly different next to each other.
  • Over 6: the nearest we have. That brand has nothing close; treat it as a different color.

A paint store can also mix one brand’s color in another brand’s paint from its formula, which gets closer than any off-the-shelf twin. The converter is for when you want a color that is already on the other brand’s fan deck.

LRV of popular paint colors

LRV (light reflectance value) is how much light a paint reflects, from 0 for black to 100 for a perfect white. Every color the converter finds shows an LRV, worked out from the brand’s digital color. For the popular colors below it also shows the LRV the brand itself prints, read on 2026-10-10 from Sherwin-Williams’ color service, Benjamin Moore’s color pages and Behr’s color pages.

Sherwin-Williams’ and Behr’s printed LRVs agree with the ones worked out from their digital colors to within half a point. Benjamin Moore’s run lower for its whites and grays, by 1.9 to 2.8 points here (White Dove: 83.2 printed, 86 worked out), and higher for Hale Navy (8.4 against 7): A digital color is only a stand-in for the paint, so for a Benjamin Moore color trust the brand’s own number. Tap Sort by LRV under the matches to list a search’s colors lightest first, for example every white you typed.

Three worked examples

White Dove at Sherwin-Williams. Benjamin Moore White Dove (OC-17) is closest to Sherwin-Williams Alabaster (SW 7008) at ΔE 1.4, very close, and to Behr HDC-MD-08 Whisper White at ΔE 0.8, which you could not tell apart. Pure White (SW 7005), often named as its twin, is the second closest Sherwin-Williams color.

Agreeable Gray at Benjamin Moore. Sherwin-Williams Agreeable Gray (SW 7029) is closest to Benjamin Moore 859 Collingwood at ΔE 0.8 and Behr HDC-NT-20 Cotton Grey at ΔE 0.6: both identical by the bands above.

Hale Navy at Sherwin-Williams. Benjamin Moore Hale Navy (HC-154) is closest to Sherwin-Williams Charcoal Blue (SW 2739) at ΔE 2.5. That is very close, not identical: a deep color shows small differences more, so look at both chips side by side.

Common mistakes when converting paint colors

  • Trusting the screen. A brand’s digital color is a stand-in, and every screen shows it differently. Hold the real chips side by side in your room.
  • Matching the name, not the code. Names repeat across brands and even within one: Benjamin Moore has two Alabasters, and its Swiss Coffee is not Behr’s Swiss Coffee. Always go by the code.
  • Forgetting the sheen. The same color looks lighter in flat and deeper in gloss. Compare chips in the sheen you will paint.
  • Skipping the sample. Even an identical match on screen can read differently in your light. Paint a sample board and look at it morning and evening.

Paint color conversion questions

Is there a Sherwin-Williams to Benjamin Moore conversion chart?

Neither brand publishes one. The chart on this page, and the converter above, find the closest color by measuring each brand’s own digital colors with CIEDE2000. For a color not in the chart, type its code into the converter.

Benjamin Moore prints 83.2 for White Dove (OC-17). Worked out from its digital color it would be 86; Benjamin Moore’s own figure is the one to use.

Why can’t the converter find my color?

The converter knows the colors in the files the brands offer designers: Sherwin-Williams’ from 2021, Benjamin Moore’s from 2016 to 2020 and Behr’s from 2020. A newer color, or one a brand left out of its file, is not there. Type its name to check, or use the paint color matcher on a photo of its chip.
