The rules behind the answer
Every KALLAX is 15⅜″ deep
Whatever the size, a KALLAX is 15⅜″ deep and holds 29 lb a shelf (IKEA). In a nook or a closet, measure from the wall to the front edge: under 15⅜″, no KALLAX fits.
Standing or lying
IKEA sells every size “standing or lying”. On its side a 2 × 4 becomes a 4-wide, 2-high sideboard, 30⅛″ tall, and a 1 × 4 a 16⅜″-high bench. The finder tries both ways unless you pick standing only.
Side by side: the same number of rows
Units with the same number of rows are the same height (to within ⅜″), so they line up side by side: a 4 × 4 and a 2 × 4 make a 6-wide wall of 24 cubes. The finder packs the most cubes into your width, then prefers fewer pieces, then the lower price, and says when the same cubes cost less in more pieces.
Anchor it, even as a room divider
IKEA sells KALLAX as “a room divider to create a room within a room”, and every size carries the same warning: “Tipping hazard – this product must be securely anchored.” Against a wall, screw it to the wall. As a divider, fix the end unit to the wall it meets, or to the floor.
What fits in one cube
IKEA’s own DRÖNA box is 13 × 15 × 13″, and its door, drawer and shelf inserts are 13 × 13″. Bins sold as “Kallax size” are the same 13 × 15 × 13″. A 13″ cube bin fits too, with a little space behind it.
Worked examples
A 60 × 60″ wall. A KALLAX 4 × 4: 16 cubes, 57⅞″ wide and 57⅝″ high, $179.99, with 2⅛″ to spare across.
A 75″-wide wall under a 60″ window sill. A KALLAX 3 × 4 and 2 × 4 side by side: 20 cubes, 74″ wide, $209.98. A 4 × 4 with a 1 × 4 also gives 20 cubes and fits at 74¼″, but costs $239.98.
A 10-foot wall under windows 36″ up. Two KALLAX 2 × 4 on their side: 16 cubes, 115¼″ wide and 30⅛″ high, $159.98, a low sideboard the length of the wall.
A 12-foot room divider, up to 62″ tall. Three KALLAX 3 × 4: 36 cubes, 131⅝″ wide, $389.97. One 3 × 4 with three 2 × 4s gives the same 36 cubes for $369.96, in four pieces.
Common Kallax mistakes
- Buying by the name. “Kallax 4 × 2” in a listing may be a 2 × 4 lying down, and some sites list sizes IKEA US does not sell. Go by width × height.
- Forgetting the baseboard. A baseboard holds the unit off the wall by its own thickness, so a nook needs 15⅜″ plus the baseboard. Measure it.
- Measuring to the ceiling and stopping there. A unit built on its back and tipped up sweeps the diagonal of its height and depth: a 5 × 5 needs about 73¼″ to stand up, not 71⅝″.
- A room divider left free-standing. IKEA says it must be anchored. Fix the end unit to the wall it meets, or to the floor.
- Loading the top shelves heavy. Books go in the bottom rows, lighter things up top.
