The rules behind the layout

RoomSketcher’s office measurements: a desk is usually 48–60″ wide and 24–30″ deep, and from its front edge to the wall behind the chair 23–25″ is the least a standard chair needs, 30–32″ is better, and 33–36″ is recommended. The planner keeps 36″ and drops to 30″ only when nothing else fits. Its 28″ path from the door to every piece is RoomSketcher’s minimum for a way out.
Where the desk goes
OSHA’s computer workstation guide says to place the screen at right angles to windows: facing a window puts bright light in your eyes, and a window behind you shows up on the screen. So the planner puts the desk on a wall at right angles to the window’s whenever it can, then keeps the most open floor.
The pieces and the door
The shelves are an IKEA KALLAX 2 × 4, 30⅛″ wide and 15⅜″ deep. The daybed is a twin in its frame, 79 × 41″ (Vinsetto’s), with the 24″ of floor our bedroom planner keeps beside a bed. A door that opens in sweeps a 36 × 36″ square that must stay clear; one that opens out needs only room to step in. The walls are taken as 5″ thick, so a 10 × 12 ft shed is 9′ 2″ × 11′ 2″ inside.
Cooling and the permit
ENERGY STAR sizes a room air conditioner by the floor it cools: 5,000 BTU an hour for 100–150 sq ft, 6,000 for 150–250, 10% less in heavy shade and 10% more in full sun, for an 8 ft ceiling. The model building code (IRC R105.2) lets a tool or storage shed of up to 200 sq ft go without a building permit. An office with power, insulation or heat may not count as a storage shed, so ask your city before you build.
Worked examples
An 8 × 10 ft shed with a desk, shelves and a daybed. The desk and shelves fit; the daybed does not. An 8 × 12 ft shed holds all three.
A 10 × 12 ft shed whose door opens in. The door’s swing takes a 36″ square of floor, and the daybed no longer fits. Hang the door to open out and it does.
A 12 × 16 ft office for two in full sun. Both desks, the shelves and the daybed fit. Its 169 sq ft take 6,600 BTU of air conditioning: 6,000 by ENERGY STAR’s chart and 10% for the sun.
Common shed office mistakes
- Buying by the outside size. 5″ walls take 10″ off each way: a 10 × 12 ft shed is 9′ 2″ × 11′ 2″ inside, 102 sq ft.
- The desk facing the window, or the window behind you. Put the window at your side (OSHA).
- A chair that backs into the door. Keep the door’s swing and the 36″ behind the chair apart, or hang the door to open out.
- A daybed that blocks the way in. It needs its own 24″ of floor, off the path from the door.
- No plan for heat and cooling. Even the smallest shed takes the chart’s smallest unit, 5,000 BTU an hour.

How much space do you need behind a desk chair?
