How to use Rate My Backyard
- Take the photo from the back door or a corner, in daylight, so it shows the seating, the ground and the edges of the yard.
- Add a note if it matters: kids and a dog, full shade, a rental, a small budget.
- Read the rating. The fixes are listed cheapest first, so the first one is usually a weekend job.

The rating is written by an AI model reading your photo, with rules we set: only what it can see, no brands or prices, nothing about any person in the photo. Anything that needs electrical, gas or pool work, it leaves to a licensed professional. It is a second opinion, not a landscape plan.
An example
A backyard deck photo from our blog scored 9/10: the tree canopy over a multi-level deck, a built-in table with benches and a brick fireplace. The three fixes were cushions for the bare benches, low lights along the step risers (with a licensed electrician for the wiring), and large planters to soften the deck’s outer edge. Its palette: dark charcoal decking, warm terracotta brick, walnut brown wood, fresh green and an amber glow. The rating above is that example, as the tool wrote it.

Under the rating, See your yard redesigned redraws your own photo in one of six styles, from modern to a Japanese garden: the same yard, house, fences and trees, with a new patio surface, planting, furniture and lights. It is an AI picture and costs 2 credits; the rating stays free. It never adds a pool, a new building or anything attached to the house. Your photo is sent to our AI provider to draw it and is not kept. Treat the picture as ideas to try, and measure before you buy.
Getting the most out of the rating
- One view of the yard per photo. Rate the patio and the lawn separately if they are far apart.
- Take it in the season you use it. A yard in bloom and a yard in winter get different fixes.
- Rate again after a change. Make the first fix, take the same photo from the same spot, and compare the scores.

What makes a backyard look good?
A clear place to sit, light for the evening, plants that soften the hard edges, paths that lead somewhere, and nothing left lying around. Most yards already have two or three of these; the rating names the missing one.
Why did it get my yard wrong?
It can only judge what the photo shows. A dark or very close photo hides the yard; take it again from the back door in daylight, and add a note about anything it cannot see.
