Inky, indigo and royal are Benjamin Moore's words: navy is “a traditional blue with black undertones”, indigo “leans warmer with purple undertones”, royal blue is “the most vibrant”. Which third of its navies each color sits in is our reading of the screen color.

Navy blues that fit

The lightest navy blue: Benjamin Moore CSP-600 Andes Summit, LRV 14.13. 50 navy blues fit.

Tap a color to choose it. LRV is how much light a color reflects (0 black, 100 a perfect white): the brand's own printed LRV where we read it, else ours, worked out from the brand's digital color. A screen shows that digital version, so check a real chip in your room's light before you buy. We are not connected to any of these brands.

Quick answer: Benjamin Moore’s most popular navy blues are Hale Navy HC-154 (LRV 8.36), Van Deusen Blue HC-156 (11.97) and Stunning 826 (8.37). The finder above lists all 50 navy blues of Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore and Behr by LRV, inky, indigo or royal.

How to use the navy paint finder

  1. Pick a brand, or keep all three.
  2. Pick inky, indigo or royal: the navies closest to black, the ones that lean purple, or the most vivid.
  3. Show the lightest or the darkest first. Every navy Benjamin Moore files is one it tags Dark (a printed LRV of 21.96 or less), so there is no light or medium choice here.
  4. Tap a navy to choose it, then see it on a wall in the room paint visualizer, or find its closest twins at the other two brands.

What counts as a navy

The finder uses Benjamin Moore’s own filing. Its color service tags every color with a family and a subfamily, and the finder takes every color it files under the subfamily Navy (27 colors), plus the two navies its navy page names that are filed elsewhere: Van Deusen Blue HC-156 and Stunning 826. Benjamin Moore: Navy blue paint strikes the perfect balance between bold color and classic neutrality.

Sherwin-Williams and Behr do not publish families this way, so a Sherwin-Williams or Behr color joins when its closest Benjamin Moore color, by CIEDE2000, is very close (under 3) and is a navy by Benjamin Moore’s filing, or when its own brand’s name says navy and its closest Benjamin Moore color is a blue or a black, with an LRV inside the range of Benjamin Moore’s own navies. Every color in the list says why it is there. That gives 50 navy blues: 12 at Sherwin-Williams, 29 at Benjamin Moore and 9 at Behr, from the brands’ own palette files.

Inky, indigo or royal

Benjamin Moore tells the deep blues apart: Navy blue is a traditional blue with black undertones, a classic hue that’s been loved in interior spaces for ages. Indigo shares similar characteristics of navy’s depth but leans warmer with purple undertones, creating an inky contrast. Royal blue is the most vibrant of the three, feeling energetic, punchier, and livelier. The finder follows those words. Inky is the third of Benjamin Moore’s own navies with the least color (a CIELAB chroma of 12.38 or less: closest to black), Indigo the third that leans furthest toward purple (a CIELAB hue of 269.72° or more) and Royal the most vivid third (a chroma of 14.94 or more); the same lines place the Sherwin-Williams and Behr colors. That is our reading of each brand’s digital color: 20 navies read inky, 19 indigo and 18 royal, and a navy can be two of them.

Popular navy blues, with their LRV

LRV, light reflectance value, is how much light a color reflects, from 0 for black to 100 for a perfect white. Benjamin Moore’s and Sherwin-Williams’ LRVs are the ones each brand prints, read from its color service on 2026-10-11; a Behr LRV is ours, worked out from its digital color, and marked (ours).

Common mistakes when choosing a navy

  • Ignoring the undertone. Benjamin Moore: Look at undertones—some lean cooler or warmer. A purple-leaning navy beside a green-leaning one on the same wall can clash.
  • Judging it on a small chip. Benjamin Moore suggests sampling using display chips, brush-on samples, or peel-and-stick options to see how the shade looks in your lighting throughout the day.
  • Too little light. Every navy here reflects less than a quarter of the light that hits it; in a dark room it can read black. Balance it with light floors or white trim.
  • Trusting a screen. Every color here is the brand’s digital stand-in for the paint.
