    Quick answer: the standard shower curtain size is 72″ × 72″ (183 × 183 cm), made for a 60″ tub. Stall curtains are 36, 48 or 54″ wide and 72″ long; extra long curtains are 84″ or 96″ long for a rod hung higher. Buy a curtain about 12″ wider than your opening, and a length that ends just above the floor: on rings, a 72″ curtain wants the rod at about 75½″.

    How to use the shower curtain size calculator

    1. Pick tub or stall. A tub’s curtain hangs outside it, with the liner inside; a stall’s hangs inside the curb.
    2. Measure wall to wall across the opening, or the length of your rod. A standard tub is 60″.
    3. Measure the rod’s height from the floor. No rod yet? Tap Not yet and enter the ceiling: you get the height to hang it.

    The rules behind the numbers

    Width: the opening plus 12″

    A curtain as wide as the opening hangs flat and pulls away from the walls when it is closed. Curtain maker Pepper Home’s rule is to measure wall to wall and add 12″, so the curtain hangs in relaxed folds; then pick the nearest width sold. A 60″ tub takes the standard 72″ width. Too wide is a problem too: extra fabric bunches at the end of the rod.

    Length: from the rod, less the rings

    Moen, which makes shower rods, puts it simply: hang a 72″ curtain from a rod 78″ above the floor and it ends about 6″ above the floor. Rings add their own drop: Moen’s roller ring is 2.84″ tall, so the curtain’s top hangs about 2½″ below the rod, and about 1″ for a hookless curtain, whose rings are sewn into its top. The best length is the longest one sold that still clears the floor. To land a hem 1″ off the floor, hang the rod at the length + 3½″ on rings, or + 2″ hookless.

    The liner: the same size, inside the tub

    The liner does the waterproofing. Buy it the same size as the curtain, or an inch or two shorter, and hang it inside the tub so the water runs back in. Its hem must end below the tub’s rim.

    “Opening it fits” leaves the 12″ of extra width for folds. The rod heights put the hem 1″ off the floor.

    Three worked examples

    A 60″ tub, the rod at 76″. 60 + 12 = 72, so the width is the standard 72″. On rings the curtain’s top hangs at 73½″, so the 72″ × 72″ curtain ends 1½″ off the floor. Hang a 72″ × 72″ liner inside the tub.

    A 36″ stall, the rod at 82″. The width wanted is 48″, and the length that clears the floor is 78″. Nobody sells 48″ × 78″, so the answer is the long stall size, 54″ × 78″, 18″ wider than the opening, and its hem lands 1½″ off the floor.

    A new rod under a 9′ ceiling. For the standard 72″ × 72″, hang the rod at 75½″. For a taller look, a 72″ × 96″ curtain with the rod at 99½″ still leaves room under the ceiling.

    Common shower curtain mistakes

    • Forgetting the rings. A 72″ curtain on a 72″ rod lies on the floor once rings add their 2½″. Measure the rod, then take the rings off.
    • A curtain as wide as the opening. It closes only when pulled flat, and leaves gaps at the walls. Add 12″.
    • A liner longer than the curtain. It shows below the hem and sits in the water on the tub floor. Buy it the same size or an inch or two shorter.
    • Hanging a stall curtain outside the curb. The water runs down it onto the bathroom floor. In a stall, the curtain hangs inside.
    • Raising the rod without a longer curtain. A high rod looks elegant only with the 84″ or 96″ length that reaches the floor.
