    How the guide picks a size

    Three makers’ guides were read, and no two agree, so the guide names each: Badeloft (2025), The Rug Decor (2026) and Towel Super Center. For your spot it takes the biggest size one of them suggests that is no longer than what it sits in front of, so no end sticks out past the tub or vanity, and no deeper than the floor in front. That rule is the guide’s own; no maker prints one. The sizes are the ones sold with the size in their name.

    Three worked examples

    A 60″ tub with 30″ of floor in front. A 24 × 40″ mat: 10″ of the tub shows past each end, and 6″ of floor stays bare beyond it.

    A 24″ vanity in a powder room, 21″ of floor. A 20 × 30″ mat would stick out past the vanity: a 17 × 24″ one, as long as the vanity, leaves 4″ of floor.

    Common bath mat mistakes

    • A mat longer than the tub or vanity. It sticks out past the fixture into the walkway.
    • Two small mats at a double vanity. One runner covers both sinks and is easier to keep straight.
    • Buying by “standard”. The makers do not agree on one: measure the spot.
    • A contour rug that does not clear the base. Check its cut-out against your toilet.
    • A plush mat where the door swings. The Home Ventilating Institute asks bathroom doors for at least ¾″ of clearance to the floor; a thicker mat catches the door.
