    Quick answer: a coffee table should be about two-thirds the length of your sofa, level with the seat cushions or up to 2″ lower, and 14–18″ in front of it. For a standard 84″ sofa with an 18″ seat, that is a table about 54″ long and 16–18″ high. Standard coffee tables are 16–18″ tall for exactly this reason: most sofa seats sit at about 17–19″.

    How to use the coffee table calculator

    1. Measure the sofa’s length, outside arm to outside arm, or tap Loveseat, Sofa or Large. For a sectional, measure the side the table will sit in front of.
    2. Measure the seat height, from the floor to the top of the seat cushion, where you actually sit.
    3. Add the space in front of the sofa if the room is tight: from the front of the sofa to the TV stand, a chair or the wall. The calculator then keeps a walkway past the table.
    4. Add the arm height if you are buying side tables too. Switch to cm at the top if you measure in metric. Copy link saves the result.

    The rules behind the numbers

    Length: two-thirds of the sofa

    A coffee table looks right when it is about two-thirds as long as the sofa. Anywhere from half to two-thirds works. Shorter and it looks lost in front of a long sofa; longer and it blocks the way to the seats at each end. Coffee tables are commonly sold in steps of about 6″ (36, 42, 48, 54 and 60″), so the calculator picks the longest standard size that does not overshoot two-thirds by more than an inch.

    Height: at the seat or up to 2″ lower

    The top of the table should be level with the seat cushions or up to 2″ lower. That is where your hand lands when you lean forward to put down a cup. A table higher than the seat feels like a wall in front of you; one much lower is a stretch to reach.

    Distance: 14–18″ from the sofa

    Leave 14–18″ between the front of the sofa and the edge of the table. At 14″ you can reach it without leaning far; past 18″ you have to get up to use it. If people walk between the table and the TV, keep at least 30″ for that walkway; 36″ is comfortable.

    Side tables: at the arm

    A side table, or end table, belongs at the sofa’s arm height or up to 2″ lower, so a lamp or a drink is easy to reach from the seat.

    The depth shown is the usual shape of a coffee table, about half as deep as it is long. A narrower table works too; the calculator narrows it for you when the room is tight.

    Three worked examples

    A standard sofa. An 84″ sofa with an 18″ seat: two-thirds is 56″, so look for a 54″ table, about 27″ deep and 16–18″ high, set 14–18″ from the sofa.

    A loveseat. A 60″ loveseat with a 17″ seat: two-thirds is 40″, so a 36″ table, about 18″ deep and 15–17″ high. A round table around 36″ across is a good fit too.

    A narrow living room. The same 84″ sofa with only 60″ to the TV stand and 25″-high arms: the table can be at most 16″ deep, set 14″ from the sofa, which leaves a 30″ walkway. Look for a narrow 54″ table, still 16–18″ high, and side tables 23–25″ high.

    Common coffee table mistakes

    • Buying by looks, not by the sofa. A table that suits the showroom can be half the length of your sofa or taller than its seat. Measure first.
    • Placing it too far away. Past 18″ nobody can reach it from the sofa, so cups end up on the floor.
    • Blocking the walkway. A deep table in a narrow room leaves no way past. Keep 30″ free where people walk, or choose a narrow or oval table.
    • Forgetting the recliner. A reclining sofa’s footrest needs clear floor in front of it. Measure how far it reaches when open and leave that plus a few inches, or use side tables instead.
    • Mismatched side tables. A side table far below the arm makes a lamp or a drink awkward to reach. Match the arm, or go up to 2″ lower.
