Pick the treadmill, or enter your own machine, and measure the room. You get the floor it needs with the clearance its maker prints, whether that fits your room, and whether the ceiling clears the tallest runner.
Your treadmill space
The Peloton Tread Vision fits: it needs 6′9″ × 14′3″ of floor with its clearance6′7″ clear behind, 2′ each side and in front (the maker's manual) · your room is 15′ × 12′ · the ceiling clears a 6′ runner by Peloton's 20″ rule
Quick answer: a treadmill needs much more floor than its own size. Peloton asks 78.7 inches (2 m) clear behind and 24 inches to the left, right and front; Bowflex asks 79 inches behind and 24 around; NordicTrack asks 8 feet behind and 2 feet each side. A 68 × 33-inch Peloton Tread Vision takes 6′9″ × 14′3″ of floor, about 96 sq ft. Peloton also wants the ceiling 20 inches above your tallest runner.
How to use the treadmill space calculator
- Pick the treadmill, or choose “another machine” and type its length and width and the clearance its manual asks for. The same works for a bike, rower or elliptical.
- Measure the room: its length, width and ceiling, and enter the tallest person who will run on it.
- Read the answer: the floor it needs with its clearance, whether that fits either way round, and whether the ceiling clears your tallest runner. The drawing puts it in a corner of your room to scale.

The rules, and where they come from
Peloton. Its Tread spec page: “24” of clearance to the left, right, and front … and 78.7″ of clearance behind”. Its manual: “at least 78.7 in/2 m of clearance directly behind the Tread, and 24 in/60 cm of clearance on each side”. The ceiling: “20” greater than the user’s height”.
NordicTrack. Its user’s manuals: “Place the treadmill on a level surface, with at least 8 ft. (2.4 m) of clearance behind it and 2 ft. (0.6 m) on each side.”
Bowflex. Its setup pages: “Please allow a minimum work area of 24 inches around the perimeter of the treadmill. The back of the treadmill will require a minimum 79 inch clearance.” For the ceiling it asks only “adequate height clearance, taking into consideration the height of the user and maximum incline”.
Why behind matters most. The clear floor behind the belt is where a runner lands after a slip. A wall, a sofa or a door that swings into it does not count as clearance.
Treadmill sizes and the floor they need
| Treadmill | Its size | Clear behind | Clear each side | Floor with clearance | Area |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peloton Tread Vision | 5′8″ × 2′9″ | 6′7″ | 2′, and 2′ in front | 6′9″ × 14′3″ | 96 sq ft |
| Peloton Tread Flex | 5′11″ × 2′10″ | 6′7″ | 2′, and 2′ in front | 6′10″ × 14′5″ | 98 sq ft |
| Peloton Tread+ Vision | 6′3″ × 3′1″ | 6′7″ | 2′, and 2′ in front | 7′1″ × 14′10″ | 105 sq ft |
| NordicTrack T 6.5 S | 6′1″ × 3′ | 8′ | 2′ | 7′ × 14′1″ | 99 sq ft |
| NordicTrack X32i | 6′5″ × 3′4″ | 8′ | 2′ | 7′4″ × 14′5″ | 106 sq ft |
| Bowflex T9 | 6′6″ × 3′1″ | 6′7″ | 2′, and 2′ in front | 7′1″ × 15′1″ | 107 sq ft |
Sizes from Peloton’s spec page, NordicTrack’s user’s manuals (T 6.5 S, model NTL17915; X32i incline trainer, NTL39221) and the Bowflex T9 owner’s manual; clearances as each maker prints them.
Worked examples
The Peloton Tread Vision fits: it needs 6′9″ × 14′3″ of floor with its clearance: a 15 × 12 ft spare room. It fits along the 15 ft wall, with 84 sq ft of the room left.
The Peloton Tread Vision does not fit: it needs 6′9″ × 14′3″ of floor with its clearance: a 12 × 10 ft room is 2′3″ too short for Peloton’s front and back clearances.
The NordicTrack X32i fits: it needs 7′4″ × 14′5″ of floor with its clearance: NordicTrack asks 8 ft clear behind, so the incline trainer takes about 106 sq ft.
Your machine fits: it needs 6′ × 6′ of floor with its clearance: a 4 × 2 ft bike with 2 ft of clearance all round, in a 10 × 8 ft box room.
Common mistakes
- Measuring only the machine. Its spec size leaves out the 6½ to 8 feet behind it that its maker asks.
- Counting a wall as clearance. The zone behind and beside the belt must be open floor.
- Forgetting the incline and the runner. Peloton: the ceiling should be “20” greater than the user’s height”. A basement with a low ceiling can fail it.
- A garage or porch. NordicTrack: “Do not put the treadmill in a garage or covered patio, or near water.”
