Quick answer: a standard throw blanket is 50 × 60″ (127 × 152 cm). Lap throws are about 40 × 50″, large throws 50 × 70″ and oversized throws 60 × 80″. A standard throw covers an adult up to about 5′8″ lying on the sofa; taller people and two people sharing need a large one. At the foot of a bed, a queen takes a large throw and a king an oversized one.

How to use the throw blanket size calculator

    1. Pick what the throw is for: curling up on the sofa, or the foot of a bed.
    2. For the sofa, type your height (5’6″ or 168 cm both work) and whether one or two of you will be under it.
    3. For a bed, pick the bed size. The answer is the smallest standard throw that does the job, drawn to scale. Copy link keeps it.

Shops name sizes a little differently: some call 60 × 72″ oversized, and some lap throws are 36 × 48″. Go by the inches, not the name.

    The rules behind the sizes

Covering you: your height minus 8″

Lying on the sofa, a throw should reach from your shoulders to past your feet, so its long side needs to be at least your height minus about 8″: your head and neck stay out. The short side has to wrap around you: 40″ does for one person, and 50″ tucks in.

    Two of you: 70″ across

Two people sitting side by side share a throw across their laps, so its long side needs about 70″. That makes a large throw the smallest one that works for two.

The foot of a bed: the mattress width

Laid across the foot of the bed, a throw looks finished when its long side reaches the mattress edges, with a little drape. Mattress widths: twin and twin XL 38″, full 54″, queen 60″, king 76″, California king 72″.

    Three worked examples

One person, 5′6″. The long side needs 58″, so a standard 50 × 60″ throw covers you, with 2″ to spare.

One person, 6′2″. The long side needs 66″, past a standard throw, so buy a large 50 × 70″ throw, with 4″ to spare.

A queen bed. The mattress is 60″ wide, so the throw needs 64″ across the foot: a large 50 × 70″ throw, folded lengthwise into a band.

    Common throw blanket mistakes

    • Buying by the name. “Oversized” means 60 × 72″ in one shop and 60 × 80″ in another. Check the inches.
    • Too small for two. A standard throw is a one-person throw. For two, go large or oversized.
    • A tiny throw on a big bed. A standard throw across a king bed stops well short of the edges and looks like a scarf. Size it to the mattress.
    • Forgetting the fringe. Some sizes are measured with the fringe or tassels. If the measurement includes them, the blanket itself is a few inches smaller.

    Throw blanket size questions

What size is a throw blanket?

    A standard throw blanket is 50 × 60″ (127 × 152 cm). Lap throws are about 40 × 50″, large throws 50 × 70″ and oversized throws 60 × 80″.

What is the standard throw blanket size?

50 × 60 inches. It covers one adult up to about 5′8″ lying down and folds neatly over the arm of a sofa, which is why it is the size most shops call standard.

What size throw blanket for a king bed?

An oversized throw, 60 × 80″. Its 80″ side spans a king mattress (76″ wide) laid across the foot of the bed. A smaller throw stops short of the edges.

What size throw blanket for a queen bed?

A large throw, 50 × 70″. A queen mattress is 60″ wide, so the 70″ side covers it with a little drape on each side.

What size throw is best for two people on a couch?

At least a large throw, 50 × 70″, so it stretches across both laps. An oversized 60 × 80″ throw is roomier, and is the one to buy if you like to lie down under it together.

What is the difference between a throw and a blanket?

Size and use. A throw is small enough to use on the sofa or lay across the foot of a bed; a bed blanket is sized to the mattress and hangs over its sides, about 90 × 90″ for a full or queen.
