Shower Kit Size Finder

Measure the space your shower goes in, between three walls or in a corner. You get every shower kit made for it, one-piece, multi-piece, walls only or with the door, checked against your ceiling, the door it must come through, and the code.

At the studs, with the old wall board off: a kit fastens to the studs. A tub's alcove is the tub's length by its width. 60 1/8 or 60.125 both work.

Quick answer: a shower kit is sized for the space at the studs, not the finished wall: a 60″ unit asks for 60⅛″ stud to stud, ±⅛″ (MAAX). Alcove kits come mostly 32, 36, 48 or 60″ wide and 30–36″ deep; corner and neo-angle kits 32–48″ along each wall. They stand 72–90″ tall, and a one-piece unit seldom fits through a house door.

How to use the shower kit size finder

      1. Pick the space: between three walls (an alcove, like a tub’s) or in a corner (two walls, the shower open on the other two sides).
      2. Measure it at the studs. A kit fastens to the studs, so take the old wall board off, or measure the opening it leaves. An alcove: wall to wall, and how deep the side walls are. A corner: each wall’s free length from the corner, to the door, the vanity or the window.
      3. Enter the ceiling and the narrowest door on the way to the bathroom (its clear width, the door open). Leave the door blank if the walls are not up yet.
      4. Pick the kit and the drain (one-piece, multi-piece, walls only or with the door; the drain in the middle or at one end, where yours already is). The list names every kit that fits, the closest fit first, with its size, inside, door opening, step in and drain. Copy link to this shower keeps it all.

      Shower kit sizes, by alcove

Each alcove is measured at the studs, under a 96″ ceiling. The inside is the kit’s own figure, held to the code’s 30″ least dimension and 900 sq in (or 25″ with 1,300 sq in).

Between the stock widths there is little: from 40⅜ to 41⅞″ nothing fits, at 42″ only MAAX’s SST42 (sold in the Pacific Northwest), and from 52⅝ to 59⅜″ nothing at all. There, frame a wall to the next size down or tile the shower on a base made to measure.

      Four showers, measured

A tub’s alcove, 60⅛ × 32″ at the studs, a 96″ ceiling, a 28″ bathroom door. 12 kits fit the space, but 5 of them are one-piece units, 30–33″ on their narrowest side, and none goes through a 28″ door. That leaves 7: MAAX’s Utile 6032 and Interflo 6030 walls (on a base you choose), the two QSI-6030s and the Interflo 6030 in five pieces, and the KDS 3060 and its AFR version in four (Pacific Northwest), with the studs furred ⅜″.

      A new 48″ stall, 48⅛ × 36″, the walls not up yet. 21 kits fit, 13 of them one-piece. MAAX’s Icon SH48361S leads: 48 × 36 × 75½″, 44½ × 34⅝″ inside, a 44½″ opening for the door, a 3½″ step in. The Allia SH-4834 fits too, but its inside, 41⅞ × 29¼″, is under the code’s 30″.

A small 32″ stall, 32⅛ × 34″, a 30″ door. Every one-piece is 31⅝–32″ on its narrowest side, so the door leaves 4 multi-piece kits: the 32SKD (sold in the Midwest), the Gallery SH-3232 (the Midwest and Northeast) and the KDS 3232 with its AFR version. MAAX prints the KDS’s inside as 28½ × 29⅝″: no 32″ kit that prints its inside reaches the code’s 30″.

A 38 × 38″ corner, a 30″ door. 19 kits fit. The neo-angle kits made for it, MAAX’s Himalaya and Summit, come in three pieces with the door; VIGO’s Piedmont is glass on its base, 25″ to walk in. Nine one-piece kits and units fit the corner but not the door, 32–38″ on their narrowest side: MAAX’s Orchid, Papaya, Scarlet and Mediterranean III kits and its Freestyle, Equinox and CSS36 units. The Freestyle 37s also come in two pieces, and those get in.

      Common mistakes

      • Measuring the finished wall. A kit goes on the studs before any wall board: MAAX’s table is the alcove “REQUIRED FOR INSTALLATION”, 60⅛″ for a 60″ unit, ±⅛″. Measured over ½″ drywall, the space reads about an inch narrower than the one the kit needs.
      • Buying a one-piece for a finished house. MAAX calls it “perfect for new construction”. It goes through a door on its narrowest side, 29¾–45¼″ (half of them 36″ or more), and most bathroom doors are narrower. A multi-piece unit “fits through any doorway”.
      • Buying by the box’s number. A “48 × 34″” MAAX Allia is 48 × 34 × 79″ outside but 41⅞ × 29¼″ inside. The code measures the inside.
      • Forgetting the drain. Replacing a tub, the drain stays where it is: at one end. Most stall units drain in the middle; pick one with a drain at your end, or move the drain.
      • A gap between stock sizes. A kit’s width is fixed: MAAX allows ±⅛″. Between widths, fur the studs out (up to about 1½″) or frame a wall to the next size down.
      • The ceiling and the step in. The tallest units stand 87–90″. An AFR (raised) base adds 2–3½″ to the step in: 6–6⅞″ against 3⅜–4″.

Shower kit sizes: questions people ask

What size shower kit do I need?

One whose width matches your space at the studs: from the kit’s width to ¼″ more (MAAX’s ±⅛″ on width + ⅛″). Its depth must not be more than about an inch past the side walls, and it must stand under your ceiling.

What are the standard shower stall sizes?

      Alcove units come 32, 36, 48 and 60″ wide by 30–36″ deep (32 × 32, 36 × 36, 48 × 34, 48 × 36, 60 × 30, 60 × 32, 60 × 34, 60 × 36). Corner and neo-angle kits come 32, 36, 38, 40, 42 and 48″ along each wall.

Will a one-piece shower fit through my door?

Only if its narrowest side, usually its depth, is narrower than the door’s clear width. One-piece units are 29¾–45¼″ on that side, half of them 36″ or more, so most need a wide door or a missing wall. MAAX calls them “perfect for new construction”.

What is the smallest shower kit that meets code?

By the IRC, 900 sq in inside and 30″ in the least dimension (or 25″ with 1,300 sq in). On the insides MAAX prints, no 32″ unit makes it (28½″ inside); its 36 × 36″ units do, at 30¼ × 31¼″ and more.

Can I put a shower kit where my bathtub was?

Yes: a 60″ tub’s alcove takes the 60 × 30 and 60 × 32 kits. Pick one with its drain at the tub’s end, and a multi-piece one if it must come through a house door. The tub-to-shower planner plans the rest.

What size is a neo-angle shower kit?

It is sold by its size along each wall: 36, 37, 38, 40, 42 or 48″. MAAX’s neo-angle kits come with the door; VIGO’s Piedmont and Gemini are glass on their base, leaving 25 and 27″ to walk in.

How tall is a shower kit?

The kits here stand 72–90″: MAAX’s Allia and Camelia units with a roof 87–88″, its M148 and M160 90″. Its guide asks an alcove 87″ tall for a one-piece with a roof, 80″ without.
