Doors that fit, the roomiest way in first

Quick answer: a shower door is sold for a span of openings, not one size. A “48″” door fits a finished opening of about 44–47″, a “60″” door 54–60″, and a 36″ stall takes pivot doors sold for 30–37″. They stand 64½–79″ tall. On a 48″ stall a sliding door leaves only 18–22″ to walk in; the code wants 22″.

How to use the shower door size finder

      1. Pick the shower: between two walls (an alcove or a stall, the door across the opening), a corner (a door and a return panel on a base), or a neo-angle.
      2. Measure it the way the makers ask. Between two walls: finished wall to finished wall, over the tile, in three places: on the base or threshold, halfway up, and 72″ up (DreamLine’s guide). A corner or neo-angle: the base’s size as sold, from its label or spec sheet.
      3. Measure the clear floor in front, to the facing wall, the vanity or the toilet: a hinged door swings out over it.
      4. Pick the door (any, sliding, hinged or pivot, or a fixed glass panel with no door). The list names every stock door that fits, the roomiest way in first, with its height, its glass and the threshold it needs. Copy link to this shower keeps it all.

Standard shower door sizes, by opening

Each opening is the finished width, wall to wall, the same at all three heights. The way in is each door’s walk-through at that opening, read between the narrowest and widest its maker prints.

Most of MAAX’s “60″” doors stop at a 59″ opening; past it, VIGO’s doors adjust to 60″ and its Elan to 72″. The narrowest sliding or bypass door, MAAX’s Incognito 74, fits from 39″ and leaves 16½″ to walk in: under that, every door pivots.

      Five showers, measured

A 48″ stall, 46½″ at the bottom and halfway up, 46¾″ at 72″, 36″ of floor in front. 24 doors span both widths. The 7 hinged and pivot doors leave 22¾–28⅜″ to walk in (MAAX Manhattan the most). The 17 sliding and bypass doors leave 18–22″, and only the Polar, Aura and Kameleon reach the code’s 22″. The floor in front is room for the widest door to swing.

A 60″ stall, 59″, 59⅛″ and 59¼″. The walls lean ¼″, and most MAAX “60″” doors stop at 59″, so 8 doors span all three. MAAX’s Polar leaves 28¼″, VIGO’s Luca 26″, and the rest 24–25″.

A 36″ stall, 35″ wide, 24″ in front. No sliding door is sold this narrow. Seven pivot doors fit, leaving 25–29⅝″ through, but each opens outward over about its own width, and 24″ of floor is less than any of them needs.

A 60″ walk-in with a fixed glass panel. VIGO’s panels are 34″ of glass, which leaves 26″ to walk in, over the code’s 22″. A panel needs an opening of 56″ or more.

A 48 × 36″ corner base. MAAX sells two doors for it: the ModulR pivot (24½–26½″ through) and the Halo Pro sliding door (16¼–18¾″), under the code’s 22″.

      Common mistakes

      • Buying the door by the number on the box. Most of MAAX’s “48″” doors fit a finished opening of 44–47″, VIGO’s Elan 44–48″. Measure yours, then buy the door whose span holds it.
      • Measuring once, or before the tile. DreamLine asks for finished walls and three widths. If they differ, the walls are out of plumb, and the door must adjust across the difference.
      • Taking the way in for granted. A sliding door’s panels overlap, so on a 48″ stall most leave under the 22″ the code asks for (IRC P2708.1.1). A pivot door leaves more.
      • A hinged door with nowhere to swing. “Hinged shower doors shall open outward” (IRC P2708.1), over about their own width of floor.
      • Border tile at the door’s edge. DreamLine: “Never use accent or border tile, which may protrude, near area where door will be installed.”
      • Forgetting the threshold. MAAX prints the threshold width each door needs, ¾–3″. Check the curb or base’s top before you buy.

Shower door sizes: questions people ask

What is the standard shower door size?

There is no single size: each door is sold for a span of finished openings. Most fit a 48″ stall (about 44–47″) or a 60″ one (about 56–60″), and stand 68–79″ tall. The finder lists the ones that fit your opening.

What size is a 48 inch shower door?

Most fit a finished opening of about 44 to 47″ (MAAX) or 44 to 48″ (VIGO’s Elan). On a 46½″ opening it leaves 18–22″ to walk in as a sliding door, or 22¾–28⅜″ as a pivot door.

What size is a 60 inch shower door?

It fits about 54 to 60″: MAAX’s Polar 54–59½″, most other MAAX doors 56–59″, and VIGO’s sliding doors 56–60″. On a 56–59″ opening they leave 22–28½″ to walk in.

What door fits a 36 inch shower?

A pivot or hinged door: no sliding door is sold under a 39″ opening. MAAX and VIGO sell pivot doors for 30–37″ openings; on a 36″ one four fit (MAAX’s Madono, Pivolok Deluxe and Manhattan, VIGO’s Pirouette), leaving 24⅜–30⅞″ to walk in, and each needs about that much floor in front to swing out.

How do you measure for a shower door?

With the walls finished, measure wall to wall in three places: on the base or threshold, halfway up, and 72″ up (DreamLine). Check the walls with a level. The door must fit both your narrowest and your widest width.

What is the standard shower door height?

The doors here stand 64½″ (MAAX’s Pivolok) to 79″ (VIGO’s Luca); most stand 70–78″. A door is sold at one height, so the finder prints each one’s beside its fit.

What size corner shower door do I need?

      One sold for your base’s size, front × return: MAAX sells corner doors for 36 × 36, 42 × 34, 48 × 32, 48 × 34, 48 × 36, 60 × 32 and 60 × 36″ bases.

What size are neo angle shower doors?

They are sold by the base’s size along each wall: 36, 38 and 40″ (MAAX’s Silhouette, Hana, Davana and Link), leaving about 18–26″ to walk in.
