Your piano
Up to a 5′3″ grand for your 15′ × 12′ roomYamaha’s rule: the walls ten times the piano, so 5′4¾″ at most · 4 of 15 grands here
Quick answer: almost every piano is about 5 feet wide (Yamaha). Uprights stand 43–52″ tall and 21–26″ deep; grands run from 5′ (Yamaha GB1K) to 8′11¾″ (Steinway Model D) long, measured from the front of the keys to the end of the lid. Yamaha’s rule of thumb: the room’s walls should add up to at least ten times the piano’s length, so a 15′ × 12′ room (54′ of wall) suits a grand up to about 5′4″. Add 2 feet in front for the bench.

The rules, and where they come from
The room. Yamaha, “What’s the Best Piano for Your Room?” (2025): “the total length of the walls of the room should be at least ten times bigger than the length of the piano. A 9-foot concert grand piano, for example, should ideally be placed in a room that has 90 feet or more of total wall length”.
The bench. Yamaha suggests tracing the piano’s outline on paper and adding “an extra 2 feet to the depth of the outline to allow for when the bench is pulled out while you’re playing.”
The sizes. “Grand piano length is measured from the key slip — the piece of wood in front of the keys on the keyboard — to the very end of the lid”, and “almost all pianos — both grands and uprights — are approximately 5 feet wide”, because they share the 88-note keyboard. The lengths, widths and weights below are from Yamaha’s and Steinway’s own spec pages.
Where it goes. Yamaha: “upright pianos are designed to be placed against a wall”; grands “sound best when they’re out in the middle of a room, or placed at a 45-degree angle in a corner”. Never in direct sunlight, and not near air vents.

Worked examples
Up to a 5′3″ grand for your 15′ × 12′ room: its walls add up to 54′, so Yamaha’s rule allows 5′4¾″: the GB1K, the Steinway Model S, the GC1 or the C1X.
Up to a 7′ grand for your 20′ × 15′ room: 70′ of wall, room for a Yamaha C6X or anything shorter.
The Yamaha C3X is too big for your 15′ × 12′ room: 6′1″ long, it asks for 60′10″ of wall and the room has 54′. It fits on the floor; Yamaha’s rule is about the sound.
No grand piano suits your 10′ × 10′ room: 40′ of wall allows 4′, shorter than any grand here. Any of Yamaha’s uprights fits against one wall.
Common mistakes
- Measuring a grand without the bench. The player sits in front of it: add 2 feet.
- Buying the biggest grand that fits the floor. A large grand “might be overbearing” in a lively room (Yamaha); its ten-times rule is about sound, not floor space.
- Pushing a grand against a wall. Grands sound best out in the room or at 45° in a corner; uprights go against a wall.
- Putting it by a sunny window or a vent. Heat and changing temperatures harm the instrument.
