Pick the bed and measure the floor in front of its wall. You see how big each daybed or futon read is closed, how far it reaches into the room open, and whether your floor and wall take it with room to walk past.
Your daybed
A daybed with a trundle needs 110.3–113.5″ (9′ 2.3″–9′ 5.5″) of floor in front of the wallthe trundle pulled out plus a 30″ walkway · closed, 40.5–43.5″ deep · your 120″ (10′) floor takes all 3 read
Quick answer: a twin daybed is 75½–78⅜″ long and 40½–43½″ deep and takes a twin mattress (IKEA’s: 38¼ × 74⅜″). With a trundle pulled out it reaches 80¼–83½″ from the wall; one that pulls out to a double, 76¾–79½″. A futon is 30–38¼″ deep as a sofa and 43½–55⅛″ open. Add a 30″ walkway past it.
How to use the daybed and futon calculator
- Pick the bed: a daybed, a daybed with a trundle, a daybed that pulls out to a double, or a futon or sofa bed.
- Measure the floor from the wall it stands against to the wall or furniture opposite. Add the wall’s length for a nook or an alcove, and change the walkway if you want more than 30″.
- You get how much floor that kind of bed needs open, which ones read fit by their makers’ own numbers, and the room drawn from above.
The rule behind the numbers
A daybed or futon asks for two things. The wall must be as long as the bed — a futon is longest as a sofa, with its arms (DHP’s Pin Tufted: 81.5″ closed, 73″ open). The floor must take the bed open and room to walk past it. Bestar, a murphy bed maker, puts that at “at least 30 inches clearance around the open bed”.
How far each kind reaches open is what catches people out. A trundle rolls out in front of its daybed, so it adds its own depth — IKEA’s VIHALS trundle is 39¾″ deep, Novogratz’s 40″, DHP’s lift-up one 40.5″. A pull-out daybed becomes the double itself, so it reaches a little less: IKEA’s HEMNES goes from 41⅜″ to 76¾″ and takes “two twin mattresses, placed one on top of the other for single use and side-by-side when extended”. A futon lies flat in front of its back: DHP’s open to 43.5–52″, IKEA’s NYHAMN sleeper to 55⅛″.

| Daybed | IKEA VIHALS | 77.125″ × 40.5″ | 40.5″ |

| Futon or sofa bed | IKEA NYHAMN | 78.75″ × 38.25″ | 55.125″ |
Each row is the maker’s own page: IKEA’s measurement tab (in eighths of an inch, so 77 1/8″ is 77.125″), and Dorel Home’s DHP and Novogratz pages. A trundle’s reach is the daybed’s depth plus the trundle’s, which the makers print separately. Twin mattresses: IKEA’s 38¼ × 74⅜″; its VIHALS trundle takes 37¾ × 74¾″, at most 4¾″ thick.
Four worked examples
A daybed with a trundle in a 10′ room. It needs 110.3–113.5″ with a 30″ walkway: all three fit.
The same in a 9′ room. Every trundle opens, but none leaves 30″ to walk past — the Novogratz leaves 24.5″. A pull-out daybed does better: 4 of the 5 keep the walkway.
A futon on an 80″ wall, 7′ (84″) of floor. DHP’s Aiden and Andora fit; the Pin Tufted (81.5″) and Tallulah (83″) are too long for the wall, and IKEA’s NYHAMN leaves 28.9″ to walk past.
A daybed in a 6′ (72″) nook. IKEA’s VIHALS and DHP’s Manila keep a 30″ walkway; Novogratz’s Her Majesty, 43.5″ deep, leaves 28.5″.
Common mistakes
- Measuring the daybed, not the trundle. A trundle adds 39¾–40½″ in front of a 40½–43½″ daybed.
- Measuring a futon as a sofa. DHP’s Aiden is 30″ deep as a sofa and 52″ open.
- A futon’s arms. It is longest as a sofa: check the wall against the closed length.
- The wrong trundle mattress. IKEA’s VIHALS trundle takes one 4¾″ thick at most, so it rolls under.
- One thick mattress on a pull-out. IKEA’s HEMNES needs two twin mattresses, stacked as a single and side by side as a double.
