Ceiling Fan Direction: Which Way Should Your Fan Spin?

Today's date is filled in; pick your fan. You get which way its blades should turn seen from below, how fast, when to switch it next and where its reverse switch is, from the U.S. Department of Energy and the fan makers' own instructions.

By the date, the fan goes counterclockwise when the clocks spring forward and clockwise when they fall back, Hunter's reminder. A cold snap in May or a warm week in November? Pick "It's warm" or "The heat is on".

How to switch it

Quick answer: looking up at it, a ceiling fan should turn counterclockwise in summer, for a cooling breeze down onto you, and clockwise on low in winter, for a gentle updraft that brings the warm air under the ceiling back down the walls. That is the U.S. Department of Energy’s rule, and Hunter’s and Westinghouse’s. Switch when the clocks change: counterclockwise when they spring forward, clockwise when they fall back. In 2026 the clocks fall back on Sunday, November 1.

How to use the ceiling fan direction tool

      1. Leave today’s date in, or pick another. By the date, the tool goes by the clocks. If the weather disagrees with the calendar, pick It’s warm or The heat is on instead.
      2. Pick your fan: pull chains, a remote or wall control, a Wi-Fi app, or a Big Ass Fans fan.
      3. You get the direction seen from below, drawn turning, the speed, the day to switch it next and how. Add your summer thermostat setting to see what to set it to with the fan on.

      The rule behind the answer

Summer: the Department of Energy’s Energy Saver guide says “Run ceiling fans counterclockwise to create a cooling breeze.” The blades’ pitch pushes air down, and the breeze cools you by wind chill. With the fan on, the DOE says you can “raise the thermostat setting by about 4°F without reducing comfort.”

Winter: “Reverse the direction to clockwise and set to low speed to circulate warm air from the ceiling down to living spaces” (DOE). Hunter keeps it on low, “any faster and you’ll start to feel a cool breeze”, and in winter mode “you should feel little to no direct airflow.” Westinghouse says the same: counterclockwise in summer, clockwise in winter.

When to switch: Hunter’s reminder is “Spring Forward = Counterclockwise and Fall Back = Clockwise”: daylight saving time runs from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November (15 U.S.C. 260a). Hawaii and most of Arizona keep standard time all year, so there, go by the weather.

The one maker that disagrees: Big Ass Fans tells owners of its fans not to reverse them. “Traditional fans running in reverse actually create uncomfortable drafts near your walls,” so it keeps its fans “in its standard forward (counterclockwise) direction, but drop it to a low speed.”

      Five worked examples

December 15, 2026. Clockwise on low: the clocks fell back on November 1. Switch back to counterclockwise on Sunday, March 14, 2027.

July 4, 2026, the thermostat at 76°F. Counterclockwise, at any speed you like. With the fan on, set the thermostat to about 80°F. Switch on Sunday, November 1, 2026.

A cold week in early October, the heat on. By the clocks it is still summer mode, but the fan follows the heat: clockwise on low now.

A Big Ass Fans fan in January. Forward (counterclockwise), on low: Big Ass Fans never reverses its fans in winter.

Saturday, March 7, 2026. Still clockwise on low, but the clocks spring forward tomorrow: switch to counterclockwise on Sunday, March 8.

      Common mistakes

      • Winter mode on high. Clockwise at speed still blows a cool draft; winter is low speed only.
      • Flipping the switch while the blades turn. Hunter: turn the fan off and let it come to a complete stop first.
      • Going by the calendar in a warm November. The fan follows the heat: on a warm day, counterclockwise is the cooler choice.
      • Reversing a Big Ass Fans fan. Its maker keeps it forward all year and just slows it down for winter.
      • Leaving it running in an empty room. The breeze cools people by wind chill; it does not cool the room itself.

Pick the right size fan and downrod with the ceiling fan size calculator, plan the room’s lights with the recessed lighting calculator, and draw the room to scale in the free 2D planner.

      Ceiling fan direction questions

Which way should a ceiling fan turn in summer?

Counterclockwise, looking up at it. The blades push air down into a breeze that cools you, and the Department of Energy says the fan lets you raise the thermostat about 4°F.

Which way should a ceiling fan turn in winter?

Clockwise, on low speed. The gentle updraft moves the warm air that collects under the ceiling down the walls without a draft. Big Ass Fans is the exception: it keeps its own fans forward (counterclockwise) on low.

Should a ceiling fan spin clockwise or counterclockwise?

Counterclockwise when it is warm, clockwise on low when the heat is on. Hunter’s reminder: spring forward = counterclockwise, fall back = clockwise.

How can I tell which way my ceiling fan is spinning?

Stand under it and look up. Counterclockwise, the blades move from the top left, down to the right and back to the top; clockwise, like a clock’s hand (Hunter). In summer mode you feel a breeze; in winter mode, little to none.

Where is the reverse switch on a ceiling fan?

On a pull-chain fan, a small slide switch on the motor housing; Hunter says to check the housing and the light fixture. A fan with a remote or wall control reverses from the control, and a Wi-Fi fan from its app.

What speed should a ceiling fan be in winter?

Low. Hunter: “any faster and you’ll start to feel a cool breeze.”

When should I change my ceiling fan direction?

When the clocks change: counterclockwise on the second Sunday of March, clockwise on the first Sunday of November (in 2026, March 8 and November 1). Or whenever the heat goes on or off.
