Enter your pool and the deck you want beside it. You get the deck's area and footprint, how high it stands, the guard round its open edge, the steps up and the gate the pool code asks for, drawn from above to scale.
Your pool deck
A 329 sq ft deck in front of your 18′ round pool, 52″ high24′ wide, 28′ front to back with the pool · a 36″ guard along 65′ of open edge · 7 steps up, 7.4″ each · a self-closing, self-latching gate at the stairs
Quick answer: an above-ground pool deck needs a walkway of at least 3 feet (Trex: what most building codes ask) and 10 to 12 feet on one side if you want chairs. It stands about as high as the pool’s wall, so it needs a guard at least 36 inches high on every open edge (IRC R312), steps no taller than 7½ inches (the pool code) and a self-closing, self-latching gate at the stairs. A 3 ft walkway and a 10 ft front for an 18′ round pool is about 329 sq ft of deck.
How to use the pool deck calculator
- Describe the pool: round or oval, its size in feet, and its wall height (48, 52 or 54 inches).
- Choose the deck: in front of the pool, or all the way round it. Set how deep the deck is in front and how wide the walkway is beside it.
- Read the answer: the deck’s area and footprint, its height, the guard round its open edge, the steps up and the gate. The drawing shows it from above, to scale.

The rules, and where they come from
The width. Trex, which makes decking: “Most building codes require a minimum deck width of three feet around above-ground pools.” Many decks are built three to six feet wide; for chairs and a table it suggests “a minimum of 10 to 12 feet on at least one side of the pool”. “Round pools often work best with partial wrap-around decks”; oval pools “are better suited for full wrap-around designs”.
The height. Trex marks the deck height against the edge of the pool, so the boards meet its top. The deck stands free: “A deck built around an above-ground pool will usually be considered a free-standing deck.”
Never under the pool. Intex’s owner’s manual: “Do not set up the pool on a deck, balcony or platform.” The deck goes beside the pool, never under it.
The guard. The 2021 International Residential Code, R312.1.1, asks for a guard where a walking surface is “more than 30 inches” above the ground. R312.1.2 makes it “not less than 36 inches” high, and R312.1.3 allows no opening a 4-inch sphere passes through.
The steps. The pool code (ISPSC 306.3) gives residential deck steps a riser “not exceeding 7 1/2 inches” and treads “not less than 10 inches”. The IRC allows 7¾″ (R311.7.5.1), asks a stairway at least 36 inches wide (R311.7.1) and a handrail on stairs “with four or more risers”, 34 to 38 inches high (R311.7.8).
The barrier. A pool must be surrounded by a barrier whose top is “not less than 48 inches … above grade where measured on the side of the barrier that faces away from the pool” (ISPSC 305.2.1). The CPSC’s Safety Barrier Guidelines say the same 48 inches. Where the deck is, its guard is that barrier; elsewhere the pool’s wall is, if it is 48″ high all round and the ladder or steps can be “secured, locked or removed” (ISPSC 305.5).
The gate. Gates “shall open outward away from the pool or spa, shall be self-closing and shall have a self-latching device” (ISPSC 305.3). A latch reached from outside sits at least 54 inches up; one on the pool side, at least 3 inches below the gate’s top (305.3.3).
Deck sizes for round pools
| Pool | In front: deck | In front: deck and pool | All round: deck | All round: deck and pool |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12′ round | 231 sq ft | 18′ × 22′ | 302 sq ft | 18′ × 25′ |
| 15′ round | 279 sq ft | 21′ × 25′ | 364 sq ft | 21′ × 28′ |
| 18′ round | 329 sq ft | 24′ × 28′ | 428 sq ft | 24′ × 31′ |
| 21′ round | 380 sq ft | 27′ × 31′ | 493 sq ft | 27′ × 34′ |
| 24′ round | 434 sq ft | 30′ × 34′ | 561 sq ft | 30′ × 37′ |
| 27′ round | 489 sq ft | 33′ × 37′ | 631 sq ft | 33′ × 40′ |
A 3 ft walkway beside and behind the pool and a 10 ft deck in front, the stairs not included.
Deck sizes for oval pools
| Pool | In front: deck | In front: deck and pool | All round: deck | All round: deck and pool |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 × 24′ oval | 351 sq ft | 30′ × 22′ | 458 sq ft | 30′ × 25′ |
| 15 × 30′ oval | 429 sq ft | 36′ × 25′ | 559 sq ft | 36′ × 28′ |
| 18 × 33′ oval | 479 sq ft | 39′ × 28′ | 623 sq ft | 39′ × 31′ |
The deck runs along a long side of the oval; the same 3 ft walkway and 10 ft front.
Steps up to a deck at the pool’s top
| Wall and deck height | Risers | Each riser | Treads (10″) | Stair run |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 48″ | 7 | 6.9″ | 6 | 60″ |
| 52″ | 7 | 7.4″ | 6 | 60″ |
| 54″ | 8 | 6.8″ | 7 | 70″ |
Risers no taller than the pool code’s 7½″, all the same height. Every one of these stairs needs a handrail (four or more risers).
Worked examples
A 329 sq ft deck in front of your 18′ round pool, 52″ high: a 3 ft walkway at the sides, a 10 ft front for chairs, seven steps of 7.4″ and a gate at the top or bottom of the stairs.
A 428 sq ft deck around your 18′ round pool, 52″ high: the same deck with a 3 ft walkway round the back. Trex says round pools often do best with a partial wrap; the full wrap adds 99 sq ft.
A 559 sq ft deck around your 15 × 30′ oval pool, 52″ high: the full wrap Trex suggests for an oval, 36′ wide and 28′ front to back with the pool.
A 329 sq ft deck in front of your 18′ round pool, 24″ high: under 30″ the IRC asks no guard, but the deck still reaches the pool, so the barrier rule wants a rail 24″ high round its edge to make 48″ above the ground.
Common mistakes
- Building the deck under the pool. A filled pool weighs tons: Intex says never on a deck, balcony or platform.
- Leaving the stairs open. The deck is the pool’s barrier, so the stairs need a gate that opens outward, closes and latches itself.
- A ladder left beside the wall. Where there is no deck, a ladder or steps must lock or come away (ISPSC 305.5, CPSC).
- Uneven steps. Split the height evenly: a 52″ deck is seven risers of 7.4″, not six of 7½″ and a short one.
- Trusting the model code. Cities amend it: Denver asks a 60-inch barrier. Check before you build.

Above-ground pool deck questions
How big should an above-ground pool deck be?
At least 3 feet wide where you walk, which Trex says most building codes ask, and 10 to 12 feet deep on one side for chairs. For an 18′ round pool that is about 329 sq ft in front of the pool, or 428 sq ft all the way round.
How high should a deck around an above-ground pool be?
About the height of the pool’s wall, so the boards meet its top: 48, 52 or 54 inches for most pools.
Does a deck around an above-ground pool need a railing?
Yes, at pool height. The IRC asks a guard at least 36 inches high on any deck more than 30 inches above the ground, with no opening a 4-inch sphere passes through.
How many steps up to an above-ground pool deck?
Seven for a 48″ or 52″ deck and eight for a 54″ one, at no more than 7½ inches each with 10-inch treads.
What kind of ladder goes with a deck?
From a deck you step into the water by a deck ladder or steps on the pool side. Any ladder outside a deck must lock or come away. Intex sells its ladders by wall height, and Doughboy’s A-frame safety ladder has a removable outer section.
Can I build a small deck for an above-ground pool?
Yes: a deck in front of the pool with 3 ft walkways at the sides. A 6 ft front for an 18′ round pool is about 233 sq ft. The rest of the pool’s wall then has to be the barrier.
Can the pool sit on a deck or platform?
Not an Intex pool: its manual says “Do not set up the pool on a deck, balcony or platform”. The deck goes beside it.
