Pick your can, what you are painting and how many coats. You get when it is dry to the touch, when you can pick it up, when the next coat must go on and when it is fully dry, from the can maker's own data sheet.
Your spray paint's times
Dry to the touch in 20–30 minutes, to handle in 1 hourRecoat within 1 hour or after 48 hours · 2 coats from 9:00 AM: handle by 10:50 AM, fully dry by 9:50 AM tomorrow
Your weather, your start time, your pace
Rust-Oleum gives its times at 70 °F and 50% humidity, Krylon at 77 °F.
Quick answer: spray paint is dry to the touch in 20 to 30 minutes and dry to handle in 1 hour, by the makers’ own data sheets (Rust-Oleum at 70 °F and 50% humidity, Krylon at 77 °F). Rust-Oleum’s cans are fully dry in 24 hours. The second coat has a window: Rust-Oleum within 1 hour or after 48 hours, Krylon Fusion All-In-One within 2 hours or after 48 hours. On plastic, Rust-Oleum gives the paint 5 to 7 days to reach full adhesion. Cooler air takes longer.
How to use the spray paint dry time calculator
- Pick your can. Not on the list, or not sure? “Any spray paint” uses the slowest times and the shortest recoat window of the cans here, which is safe for all of them.
- What are you painting? Wood, metal or plastic: plastic adds the days the paint takes to grip fully.
- How many coats: 1, 2 or 3.
- Open “Your weather, your start time, your pace” under the answer: the temperature and humidity (it says when you are outside the can’s range, or when it will be slower), when you start and how long one coat takes you. You get every coat and wait as a clock time, and the moment the recoat window closes. Copy link keeps it.
Spray paint dry times, from the makers’ data sheets
| Spray paint | Touch | Handle | Recoat | Fully dry |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch 2X Ultra Cover | 20 minutes | 1 hour | within 1 hour or after 48 hours | 24 hours |
| Rust-Oleum Universal (gloss, flat, matte) | 30 minutes | 1 hour | within 1 hour or after 48 hours | 24 hours |
| Rust-Oleum Chalked Ultra Matte | 20 minutes | 1 hour | within 1 hour or after 48 hours | 24 hours |
| Krylon Fusion All-In-One | 20 minutes | 1 hour | within 2 hours or after 48 hours | not stated |
Rust-Oleum’s sheets say “Dry and recoat times are based on 70ºF and 50% relative humidity. Allow more time at cooler temperatures.” Krylon gives its times “@ 77 °F, 50% RH” and adds that they “are temperature, humidity, and film thickness dependent”. No sheet gives different times for wood and metal.
The recoat window: within 1 hour, or after 48
This is the line people miss. Painter’s Touch 2X: “Apply a second coat or clear coat within 1 hour or after 48 hours.” Chalked: “May be recoated in 1 hour or after 48 hours.” Krylon Fusion All-In-One: “Within 2 hours or after 48 hours.” The next coat goes on inside that first hour (two for Krylon) or after 48 hours, never in between. So plan your coats together: the calculator sprays the next coat as soon as the last is dry to the touch, and tells you when the window shuts.
Weather: when to spray at all
Rust-Oleum: “Use when temperature is between 50-90ºF (10-32ºC) and humidity is below 65% to ensure proper drying.” Krylon’s Fusion All-In-One sheet gives a narrower best range: “Best results when air and surface temperature is between 55°F (12°C) to 75°F (24°C) and humidity is below 60%,” and “Applying outside of this range may impact finish.”
Four worked examples
A side table in Painter’s Touch 2X, two coats. Dry to the touch in 20 minutes, to handle in 1 hour: the first coat at 9:00, the second at 9:30 once the first is dry to the touch, safe to carry inside at 10:40, fully dry by 10:40 the next morning.
Plastic planters in Chalked. Dry to the touch in 20 minutes, to handle in 1 hour, fully dry in 24 hours, but Rust-Oleum says the paint only grips fully on plastic after 5 to 7 days: no scrubbing or stacking before then.
A metal chair in Krylon Fusion All-In-One. Dry to the touch in 20 minutes, to handle in 1 hour, with a 2-hour window for the second coat; Krylon’s sheet gives no fully-dry time.
Three coats of Universal on a metal lamp. Dry to the touch in 30 minutes, to handle in 1 hour: each coat goes on half an hour after the last, all inside the hour-long window, then 24 hours to fully dry.
Common mistakes
- The second coat the next morning. 12 or 24 hours later is inside the “wait” part of the window: either go within the hour, or wait the full 48 hours.
- Spraying on a cold or humid day. Under 50 °F or at 65% humidity and above, Rust-Oleum says not to spray; Krylon’s best results stop at 75 °F and 60%.
- Using it as soon as it can be handled. Dry to handle is 1 hour; fully dry is 24 hours for Rust-Oleum, and on plastic full adhesion takes 5 to 7 days.
- One heavy coat instead of two light ones. Krylon says its times depend on “film thickness”: a heavy coat takes longer than the can says.
