    Quick answer: give each person 24″ of table edge at the least and 30″ to be comfortable, and leave 36″ between the table and the wall on every side so chairs can come out. For six people that is a 60″ × 36″ table in a room at least 11′ × 9′; a round table for six is 60″ across. Dining tables stand 28–30″ high.

    How to use the dining table size calculator

    1. Pick a shape: rectangle, round, square or oval.
    2. Enter how many people eat at the table on a normal day. The answer is the smallest standard table that seats them comfortably, with how many it seats snugly.
    3. Add your room’s length and width if you know them. The calculator checks the table fits with the space you chose around it, and gives the biggest table the room can take.
    4. Choose the space around the table: 36″ to pull chairs out, 42″ to be roomy, 48″ where people walk behind someone seated. Copy link keeps the result.

    The rules behind the numbers

    • 24–30″ of table edge per person. A dining chair is 18–20″ (46–51 cm) wide, so 24″ (61 cm) is the least; 30″ (76 cm) leaves elbows free. On a rectangle both long sides count, plus one person at each end.
    • Round tables seat by their diameter. Knees meet under the middle of a small round, so it seats fewer than its edge suggests. The counts below are the ones furniture makers and caterers use.
    • 36″ of floor on every side. The distance from the table’s edge to the wall or the next piece of furniture: enough to pull a chair out and sit. Make it 42–48″ (107–122 cm) where people walk behind the chairs.
    • 36–42″ wide. Narrower than about 36″ (91 cm) and two place settings plus a serving dish do not fit across the table.
    • 28–30″ high. With dining chairs 18″ (46 cm) at the seat, that leaves 10–12″ for your knees.

    Three worked examples

    A family of six. At 30″ each, a 60″ × 36″ table seats all six: two on each side and one at each end. With 36″ around it, it needs 11′ × 9′ of floor.

    Eight for the holidays in a 12′ × 10′ dining room. Eight comfortably takes a 96″ × 42″ table and 14′ × 9′ 6″ of floor, more than the room has. The room fits a 72″ × 36″, which seats eight snugly.

    Common dining table mistakes

    • Measuring for the table, not the chairs. The table fits; the chairs do not come out. Measure 36″ from every edge first.
    • Buying for the one big dinner a year. A table for ten swallows a room that seats four most nights. An extending table, or a bench that tucks under, covers the holiday.
    • Corner legs at the ends. Legs at the corners cost an end seat on a narrow table. A trestle or pedestal base seats more around the same top.
    • A round table in a long room. Round and square tables suit a square room; a rectangle or an oval suits a long one.
