What cabinet refacing costs a foot

Refacing is priced by the linear foot of cabinets, and the new face sets the price. Fixr (January 2026): thermofoil or laminate $80–$125 a foot, wood veneer $100–$250 and solid wood $200–$500. HomeGuide prints the same three ranges and an overall “$150 to $450 per linear foot or $5,000 to $13,000 total for an average kitchen.” Angi puts the average job at $7,235.

Labor is the biggest share. HomeGuide: “Labor to resurface kitchen cabinets costs $3,100 to $6,500 on average, or 50% to 70% of the total project cost.” Fixr also prices it by the door, at $435 a door on average.

Paint, reface or replace?

New cabinets cost more than the box price. Fixr: “Keep in mind that replacing cabinets can be disruptive and may require you to replace your countertops or backsplash as well.” Refacing leaves the counters where they are.

When refacing is not the answer

Refacing covers the boxes you have, so they have to be worth covering. HomeGuide: “Consider cabinet replacement instead if the cabinet boxes are in poor condition or you want to change the layout.” Fixr says the same of a new floor plan: “Refacing also won’t let you change your kitchen’s layout or add interior storage features, so if you’re aiming for a new floor plan or enhanced functionality, opt for a full replacement instead.” Pick water damage, sagging or broken or move or add cabinets above and the answer becomes the price of new semi-custom cabinets.

What is not in the price

Knobs and pulls: $6–$60 each, installed. HomeGuide: “Ask the cabinet refacing contractor if the estimate includes handles and drawer pulls as some companies don’t include these items.” Pick add new ones and they go in the total.
Soft-close hinges and slides: $20–$50 a set (Angi).
Glass door inserts: $150–$500 a door (Angi).
Crown molding: $210–$570 installed (HomeGuide).

Worked examples

A small kitchen, 12 ft lower and 8 ft upper, 12 doors and 4 drawers, thermofoil, with new pulls: $1,600–$2,500 to reface plus $96–$960 for 16 knobs and pulls, so $1,700–$3,460. Painting it would be $600–$1,200.
The 34 ft kitchen with solid wood doors and new pulls: $6,970–$18,680.

Common mistakes

Measuring only the lower cabinets. The uppers count too, foot for foot.
Comparing a quote with pulls to one without. Ask what each one includes.

Refacing over water damage. Fixr: “If your existing cabinets have suffered major damage or are structurally compromised, you’ll have to splurge on replacement.”
Refacing when you want a new layout. The boxes stay where they are.
