      Quick answer: to space board and batten evenly, subtract the total width of the battens from the wall width, then divide what is left by the number of gaps. With a batten in each corner, there is one gap fewer than there are battens. Most walls look right with 12–24″ between battens. On a 12 ft wall, nine 1×3 battens leave exactly 15 3/16″ between each. The calculator above does this for your wall, down to the sixteenth of an inch, and tells you where to mark each batten.

      How to use the board and batten calculator

      1. Measure the wall from corner to corner, and decide how high the panelling goes: to the ceiling, about two-thirds of the way up, or wainscoting height.
      2. Pick the boards. 1×3 is the classic batten; 1×2 looks finer, 1×4 bolder. The top rail is usually a wider board, like a 1×4 or 1×6.
      3. Choose the spacing: type the gap you would like, or the number of battens. The calculator spreads them so every gap is exactly equal.
      4. Read the layout: the gap, the on-center distance, where to mark the left edge of each batten, the lengths to cut, and how many boards to buy. Copy link saves it for the hardware store.

      With a batten in each corner, N battens make N − 1 gaps:

      gap = (wall width − N × batten width) ÷ (N − 1)

      If you start and end with a gap instead (for example, when the corners already have trim), N battens make N + 1 gaps, so you divide by N + 1. When you type a gap you would like, the calculator tries the batten counts around it and keeps the one whose exact, even gap comes closest. That is why the answer is 15 3/16″ and not “16″, with whatever is left over at the end”.

      How far apart board and batten should be

      Between 12″ and 24″ suits most rooms. Narrow gaps look busier and more traditional, and they mean more boards, more cuts and more caulking. Wide gaps look calmer and more modern. A long wall or a tall room can take the wider end. Wall studs in most US homes are 16″ on center; if your battens land on studs, nail into them. Where they do not, construction adhesive and 18-gauge brad nails driven at opposing angles hold a batten well.

      How high board and batten should go

      Designers work in thirds. Wainscoting traditionally covers the bottom third of the wall. Taller board and batten covers about two-thirds, and full-height panelling goes to the ceiling. The one height to avoid is halfway, which cuts the wall into two equal halves and makes the room look shorter.

      Which boards to use

      Boards are sold by their nominal size, but the calculator uses what they actually measure: a 1×2 is 1½″ wide, a 1×3 is 2½″, a 1×4 is 3½″ and a 1×6 is 5½″, all about ¾″ thick. Primed MDF strips are straight and cheap for dry rooms. In a bathroom, use moisture-resistant MDF, PVC trim or primed pine.

      Three worked examples

      A 12 ft accent wall, floor to ceiling. An 8 ft ceiling, a 5½″ baseboard and a 1×4 top rail leave 87″ for each batten. Nine 1×3 battens leave 15 3/16″ between each, one every 17 11/16″ on center. That is nine 8 ft boards for the battens, and two for the 12 ft rail, joined over a stud.

      A 10 ft wall, two-thirds high, in a grid. At 64″ high, the verticals are 55″ long. Seven 1×3 battens leave 17 1/16″ gaps, and three rows of boxes 16 11/16″ tall come closest to square. That means twelve short pieces cut to fit between the verticals, and all of them come out of seven 8 ft boards.

      Wainscoting on a 14 ft wall. The panelling is 36″ high, with 1×4 battens, a 1×6 top rail and a gap of about 12″. Twelve battens leave 11 7/16″ gaps. Each batten is 25″ long, so three come out of each 8 ft board, and you need four boards. The 14 ft rail is one full board plus a 72″ piece.

      Common board and batten mistakes

      • Spacing from one end with a tape measure. Marking every 16″ from the left corner leaves an odd gap at the right. Divide the wall evenly instead.
      • Measuring only once. Walls are rarely square. Measure the width at the top and the bottom, and use the smaller number.
      • Stopping halfway up the wall. Panelling that ends at the midpoint cuts the room in two. Go to one-third, two-thirds or the ceiling.
      • Skipping the caulk. A bead of paintable caulk along every edge is what makes battens look built-in instead of stuck on.
      • Buying boards to the inch. Every order has one bowed board or one miscut. Buy one spare.

      How do you calculate board and batten spacing?

      Multiply the number of battens by the width of one batten and subtract that from the wall width. Divide what is left by the number of gaps: one fewer than the number of battens if there is a batten in each corner. Nine 1×3s (2½″ wide) on a 144″ wall: (144 − 22½) ÷ 8 = 15 3/16″.

      How high should board and batten be?

      About two-thirds of the wall height for a classic board and batten wall: 64″ under an 8 ft ceiling. It can also go all the way to the ceiling, or stop at one-third for a wainscoting look. Avoid stopping halfway up the wall.

      What is the standard height for wainscoting?

      Traditional wainscoting covers about the bottom third of the wall, which is 32–36″ in a room with an 8 ft ceiling. Taller rooms take proportionally taller wainscoting: about 36″ under 9 ft and 40″ under 10 ft.

      What size boards do you use for board and batten?

      1×3 boards (2½″ wide) are the classic choice for the battens, with 1×2s for a finer look and 1×4s for a bolder one. The top rail is usually wider, a 1×4 or 1×6, often capped with a thin ledge.

      How do you measure a wall for panelling?

      Measure the width from corner to corner at the top and at the bottom, and use the smaller number. Measure the height from the floor to where the panelling should stop, and the height of the existing baseboard. The battens run between the baseboard and the top rail.
