Ping Pong Table Room Size Calculator

Pick how you will play and measure your room. You get the room a full-size table needs for that, whether yours holds it, the space behind each end and at each side, and the most your room is good for.

Your table tennis room

A ping pong table needs a room 19′ × 11′ for home playa 9′ × 5′ table, 5′ behind each end and 3′ at each side (Sawyer Twain) · 26′ 3″ × 13′ 2″ for practice (Table Tennis England)

    Quick answer: a full-size ping pong table is 9′ × 5′ (2.74 × 1.525 m, 76 cm high). For home play it needs a room about 19′ × 11′: 5′ behind each end and 3′ at each side (Sawyer Twain), or 20′ × 12′ for a dedicated game room. Table Tennis England’s minimum for recreational play is 8 × 4 m (26′ 3″ × 13′ 2″); the ITTF’s for world title events is 14 × 7 m.

How to use the ping pong table room size calculator

    1. Pick how you will play: at home, practice and coaching, club and league matches, or the ITTF’s world-event standard.
    2. Measure the room, wall to wall, less anything a player would run into, and its ceiling if you have it.
    3. You get the room that level asks for, whether yours holds it either way round, the space it leaves behind each end and at each side, and the most your room is good for, drawn from above.

    The rules behind the numbers

The table is the same for everyone. The ITTF’s Laws of Table Tennis: “The upper surface of the table, known as the playing surface, shall be rectangular, 2.74m long and 1.525m wide, and shall lie in a horizontal plane 76cm above the floor” (Law 2.1.1), with the net 15.25 cm high (Law 2.2.3). The room around it depends on how hard you play. For a home, Sawyer Twain, a maker of game-room tables, asks for “at least 5 feet” behind each end and “at least 3 feet” on either side, which comes to 19′ × 11′. For the game itself, Table Tennis England publishes a playing area for every grade of play, from its “recommended minimum for recreational play, practice and coaching” of 8 × 4 m up to the ITTF’s 14 × 7 m for world title events, each with a clear height above it. Where the playing area runs along a wall it adds “a one metre aisle width”.

    Four worked examples

A 20′ × 14′ basement. It fits a table for home play with 5′ 6″ behind each end and 4′ 6″ at each side, and is big enough for a dedicated game room.

An 18′ × 10′ spare room. The table goes in, but it leaves 4′ 6″ behind each end and 2′ 6″ at each side: short of the 19′ × 11′ for home play.

    A 26′ 8″ × 13′ 4″ garage with an 8′ ceiling. The floor holds Table Tennis England’s 8 × 4 m for practice, but its 3 m clear height is 9′ 11″: the ceiling is too low for lobs.

    A 30′ × 15′ hall. It holds the 29′ 7″ × 14′ 10″ playing area for club and league matches.

    Common mistakes

    • Measuring for the table, not the game. The table is 9′ × 5′; the room is the table plus the space players move in.
    • Short ends. Players step back from the table for deep balls, so the space behind each end matters more than at the sides.
    • Pushing the table against a wall. A wall along the playing area takes the side space away; Table Tennis England adds a one-metre aisle.
    • Forgetting the ceiling. A lob needs height: 3 m for recreational and club play.
