Grout Dry & Cure Time Calculator

Pick your grout and where it is. You get when you can walk on it, shower, seal it and when it is cured, from the grout maker's own data sheet, as clock times from when you finished.

Quick answer: a cement grout from a bag takes 24 to 48 hours before a home shower can be used and 72 hours before heavy traffic on a floor (MAPEI Keracolor), and MAPEI gives it 21 days to cure fully. A fast-setting grout like MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA takes foot traffic after 3 hours; Custom Fusion Pro, a ready-to-use grout, after 24 hours, with 7 days before a shower. If you seal, both big sealer makers ask new grout to wait at least 48 hours. Cooler or damper rooms take longer.

How to use the grout dry time calculator

      1. Pick your grout. Not on the list, or not sure? “A cement grout from a bag” gives the range of the cement grouts here.
      2. Where is it? A floor, a shower wall, a shower floor or a backsplash: the answer leads with the time that matters there (walking, the shower, cleaning).
      3. Open “Your room and when you finished” under the answer: the room’s temperature and humidity (it says when yours will be slower, or too cold to grout at all) and the time you finished. Every time on the list becomes a clock time. Copy link keeps it.

Grout cure times, from the makers’ data sheets

Each time is the grout maker’s own, from its technical data sheet. “—” means the sheet does not give that time; the calculator never fills it in from another grout.

      GroutWalk on itHeavy trafficShowerCured
      MAPEI Keracolor S (sanded)—72 hours24–48 hours21 days
      MAPEI Keracolor U (unsanded)—72 hours24–48 hours21 days
      Custom Polyblend Plus (sanded)———72 hours
MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA3 hours——3 days
      Custom Fusion Pro24 hours72 hours7 days7 days
      Custom SimpleGrout (pre-mixed)——3 days24 hours
      MAPEI Kerapoxy CQ (epoxy)24 hours48 hours—14 days

Three of these have no shower line, so the calculator uses the longer water line each sheet does print. Ultracolor Plus FA: “For at least 3 days after completion, protect from rain and freezing, and do not immerse the installation in water.” Kerapoxy CQ: “Allow 10 to 14 days at 73°F (23°C) of curing time before water immersion or exposure to chemicals” (a shower cleaner is a chemical). Polyblend Plus: only its cure, “at least 72 hours for proper cure”. SimpleGrout’s 3 days is for shower walls; its sheet asks 7 days for a shower floor.

      When to seal new grout

After at least 48 hours. MAPEI’s sealer: “Allow new grout installations to cure for at least 48 hours before application.” Aqua Mix Sealer’s Choice Gold: “Allow adhesives and grouts in new installations to dry a minimum of 48 hours before application.” Many grouts do not need a sealer at all: MAPEI says of Keracolor “Sealing is not required”, Kerapoxy CQ needs none, and Custom says of Fusion Pro “Sealing is not necessary” (if the tile needs sealing, a water-based sealer only: “Do not use solvent-based sealers or enhancers with Fusion Pro”).

Why your grout may take longer

MAPEI gives its times at 73 °F (23 °C) and 50% humidity, and says cement grout needs “extended periods of cure and protection when temperatures drop below 60°F (16°C) and/or when the relative humidity is higher than 70%.” For its epoxy, “The optimum curing temperature is 73°F (23°C). Cooler temperatures may require extended protection times.” Custom gives Fusion Pro’s shower time “at 70° F (21° C) and 50% relative humidity” and adds “Lower temperatures and higher humidity will slow the cure times.” None says by how much, so the calculator does not guess: in a cooler or damper room it tells you to expect longer.

Below the bag’s minimum, don’t grout at all: 50 °F for the cement grouts, Fusion Pro and SimpleGrout, 60 °F for Kerapoxy CQ.

      Four worked examples

Shower walls in Keracolor S. Shower after 24–48 hours, cured in 21 days: grouted at 10:00 AM, the shower can be used from 10:00 AM two days later; seal no sooner than 48 hours if you seal, and wait the 21 days before regular cleaning.

A kitchen floor in Ultracolor Plus FA. Walk on it after 3 hours, cured in 3 days: grouted at 10:00 AM, you can walk on it at 1:00 PM; regular cleaning after 24 hours.

A shower floor in Fusion Pro. Shower after 7 days: light traffic after 24 hours and heavier traffic after 72, but no water for a week, and no sealer.

A backsplash in Kerapoxy CQ. Regular cleaning after 3 days, cured in 14 days: the epoxy needs no sealer; keep chemicals off it for 10 to 14 days.

      Common mistakes

      • Showering because it looks dry. Grout is firm in hours but cures for days: Fusion Pro asks 7 days before water, SimpleGrout 7 days on a shower floor.
      • Sealing the next morning. Both sealer makers ask new grout to wait at least 48 hours first.
      • Grouting before the tile mortar has set. Custom asks for the setting mortar to cure “a minimum 24-48 hours before cement grout is applied, unless rapid-setting mortars are used.”
      • Grouting a cold room. Under 50 °F every bag here says not to (60 °F for the epoxy), and Custom asks to keep the room above 50 °F for at least 72 hours afterwards.
      • Scrubbing a new floor. MAPEI says Keracolor must cure 21 days before regular cleaning; Kerapoxy CQ 3 days.

      Grout drying: questions people ask

How long does grout take to dry?

Hours to firm up, days to cure. MAPEI’s fast-setting Ultracolor Plus FA takes foot traffic after 3 hours; a standard cement grout like Keracolor takes 72 hours before heavy traffic and 24–48 hours before a home shower; Custom Fusion Pro 24 hours before light traffic and 7 days before a shower.

How long does grout take to cure?

MAPEI gives its cement grouts (Keracolor S and U) 21 days to cure fully, its epoxy Kerapoxy CQ 14 days and Ultracolor Plus FA 3 days. Custom asks 72 hours for Polyblend Plus to cure properly, and Fusion Pro develops its full hardness over seven days.

How long does grout need to dry before sealing?

At least 48 hours: MAPEI UltraCare Penetrating Plus says “Allow new grout installations to cure for at least 48 hours before application”, and Aqua Mix Sealer’s Choice Gold says the same. Fusion Pro and epoxy grouts need no sealer.

How long after grouting can I shower?

24 to 48 hours for MAPEI Keracolor (“For residential showers and tub surrounds, restrict use for 24 to 48 hours after grouting”), 14 days for a steam shower. Custom Fusion Pro: 7 days. SimpleGrout: 3 days on shower walls, 7 on a shower floor.

How long before you can walk on grout?

3 hours for MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA, 24 hours for Fusion Pro and for Kerapoxy CQ (48 before heavy traffic). Keracolor’s sheet only says to keep heavy traffic off for 72 hours.

How long before you can grout tiles?

Custom: the setting mortar must be cured “a minimum 24-48 hours before cement grout is applied, unless rapid-setting mortars are used”, and a fresh mud bed under Fusion Pro at least three days.
