Type your home's size, show its shape and where the front door is. You get the nine bagua areas drawn over your own floor plan, by the door method and, if you know which way the door faces, the compass method — with each area's element, colours and a missing corner said plainly. Print it in one page.
Your bagua map
Career by your front doorDoor method · Wealth in the far left corner, Love in the far right, as you come in · 40 ft × 30 ft
Quick answer: a bagua map lays nine areas over your floor plan. By the door method, the wall with your front door is the bottom row: Knowledge, Career and Helpful people from left to right as you come in. Family, Health and Children make the middle row, and Wealth, Fame and Love the far row, Wealth in the far left corner. Type your home’s size, shape and front door above to see them drawn over your own floor.
How to use the bagua map generator
- Pick the shape: a rectangle, or an L. For an L, say which corner it leaves out and how big that cut-out is.
- Type the width and length of the whole floor, outside wall to outside wall, in feet (40 ft 6 in works) or, with the m button, in meters. The drawing is your home seen from above.
- Show the front door: which wall it is in, and whether it is near one end or in the middle.
- Optional: pick the way the front door faces, or type the degrees from a compass. Stand in the doorway looking out; the way you face is the way the door faces. That turns on the compass method.
- Switch between the Door method and the Compass method tabs. Each area is listed with its element, its traditional colors, its share of your floor and a one-line tip. Print my bagua map prints the drawing and the list on one page, and Copy link keeps your home.
The door method and the compass method
There are two ways to lay the map over a home, and the generator draws both.
- The door method (often called the Western or BTB method) needs no compass. The map is a grid of three by three, stretched over the whole floor, with the front door’s wall as its bottom row. A door in the middle of that wall opens into Career, near the left end into Knowledge, and near the right end into Helpful people.
- The compass method (the classical way) follows true north instead. It divides the floor into eight slices of 45° that fan out from its middle, one for each compass direction, with Health in the middle. Career is always north and Fame always south, wherever the door is.
Neither is the only right one; they are two schools of the same tradition. If you don’t know which way your door faces, the door method is the one to use.
The nine areas
| Area | Door method | Compass method | Element | Colors |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Career | Front row, middle | North | Water | Black and deep blue |
| Knowledge | Front row, left | North-east | Earth | Blue, green and black |
| Helpful people & travel | Front row, right | North-west | Metal | Grey, white and silver |
| Family | Middle row, left | East | Wood | Green and blue |
| Health | The center | The center | Earth | Yellow and earth tones |
| Children & creativity | Middle row, right | West | Metal | White and soft pastels |
| Wealth | Far row, left | South-east | Wood | Purple, green and gold |
| Fame & reputation | Far row, middle | South | Fire | Red and orange |
| Love & relationships | Far row, right | South-west | Earth | Pink, red and white |
Left and right are as you stand inside the front door, looking in.
Four homes, mapped
A 40 × 30 ft rectangle, the front door in the middle of the bottom wall. By the door method each area is one ninth of the floor, 11%, and the door opens into Career. If the door faces south, the compass method agrees on the far side: Fame is now by the door, Career at the back. The north and south slices are the smallest, 8% each, because the house is wider than it is deep.
The same house as an L, its top-right corner cut out 16 × 12 ft. The far right cell of the grid falls almost entirely outside the walls, so the door method shows Love as a missing area. With the door facing south, the compass method shows Knowledge (north-east) as missing instead, at 4% of the floor: the two methods put the cut-out in different areas.
A 50 × 35 ft L, its bottom-left corner cut out 20 × 15 ft, the front door in the middle of the right wall. The door method turns the grid so the right wall is the bottom row: Career by the door, and Wealth, in the far left corner as you come in, is the missing area. With the door facing east, the compass method shows Love (south-west) as missing.
A 25 × 35 ft apartment, the front door near the top of the left wall. The door near the left end of its wall opens into Knowledge by the door method. If it faces west-north-west (300°), the compass method puts the door in Career, north.
Missing areas
An L, a U or a home with a garage cut into it is not a full rectangle, so part of the map lands outside the walls. Feng shui calls that part a missing area. The generator marks an area missing when less than two thirds of it lies inside your floor, hatches the cut-out on the drawing and says so in words under that area. The traditional answer is gentle: a plant or a light near that spot, or something in the garden outside it. These are layout suggestions from a centuries-old design tradition, not predictions.
Common mistakes
- Measuring one room instead of the whole floor. The map covers the whole floor of the home, outside wall to outside wall. To map one room, type that room and its door.
- Counting the garage or a porch. The map is laid over the living space. Leave out an attached garage or a porch, and a home with a garage in one corner becomes an L, with its missing corner.
- Using the door you use most. The door method starts from the front door, the one the house was built to be entered by, even if you come in through the garage.
- Reading the compass indoors. Steel and wiring pull a compass needle. Take the reading in the doorway or just outside it, away from the car.
Bagua map: questions people ask
How do I place a bagua map on my floor plan?
Stretch a grid of three by three over the whole floor, with the wall that has the front door as the bottom row. That is the door method; the generator does it for your own home’s size and shape.
Where is the wealth corner in a house?
By the door method, in the far left corner as you stand inside the front door looking in. By the compass method, in the south-east of the home.
Which bagua method is right, door or compass?
They are two schools of the same tradition. The door method needs only the front door; the compass method needs the way the door faces. The generator shows both, so you can compare them.
What if my front door is in the middle of the bagua?
By the door method the front door is always in the bottom row: Knowledge, Career or Helpful people. A door near the left end of its wall opens into Knowledge, in the middle into Career, near the right end into Helpful people.
What is a missing area?
Part of the map that falls outside your walls, as in an L-shaped home. The generator marks an area missing when less than two thirds of it is inside your floor.
Can I make a bagua map for one room?
Yes. Type the room’s size and mark its door as the front door: the same nine areas fit any room.
Does it work in meters?
Yes. Press m and type the home in meters (12.5) or centimeters (1250 cm); the link you copy keeps the same home.
