Earthy and gray-leaning are Benjamin Moore's words for sage: “Gray lends additional soothing vibes, while yellow or brown pulls in an ethereal earthiness.” Which third of its sages each color sits in is our reading of the screen color.

Sage greens that fit

The lightest sage green: Benjamin Moore 464 Thornton Sage, LRV 66.28. 88 sage greens fit.

Tap a color to choose it. LRV is how much light a color reflects (0 black, 100 a perfect white): the brand's own printed LRV where we read it, else ours, worked out from the brand's digital color. A screen shows that digital version, so check a real chip in your room's light before you buy. We are not connected to any of these brands.

Quick answer: Benjamin Moore’s most popular sage greens include October Mist 1495 (LRV 46.54), Soft Fern 2144-40 (56.67) and Saybrook Sage HC-114 (45.46). The finder above lists all 88 sage greens of Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore and Behr by LRV, earthy or gray-leaning, light to deep.

How to use the sage green paint finder

  1. Pick a brand, or keep all three.
  2. Pick an undertone: earthy (the sages that lean yellow or brown) or gray-leaning (the softest, grayest sages).
  3. Pick how light: Light, Medium or Deep, by Benjamin Moore’s own Light, Medium and Dark tags (every color it tags Dark has a printed LRV of 21.96 or less, every Light one 57.09 or more).
  4. Tap a sage to choose it, then see it on a wall in the room paint visualizer, or find its closest twins at the other two brands.

What counts as a sage green

The finder uses Benjamin Moore’s own filing. Its color service tags every color with a family and a subfamily, and the finder takes every color it files under the subfamily Sage (50 colors), plus the sages its sage page names: October Mist 1495, Soft Fern 2144-40 and Urban Nature AF-440, which it suggests for sage exteriors. Benjamin Moore describes the family this way: A longtime homeowner and designer favorite, sage bridges the gap between rustic and modern, making it a perfect color for your own personal oasis.

Sherwin-Williams and Behr do not publish families this way, so a Sherwin-Williams or Behr color joins when its closest Benjamin Moore color, by CIEDE2000, is very close (under 3) and is a sage by Benjamin Moore’s filing, or when its own brand’s name says sage (“Clary Sage”) and its closest Benjamin Moore color is a green or a neutral, with an LRV inside the range of Benjamin Moore’s own sages. Every color in the list says why it is there. That gives 88 sage greens: 14 at Sherwin-Williams, 53 at Benjamin Moore and 21 at Behr, from the brands’ own palette files.

Earthy or gray-leaning: the undertone

Benjamin Moore splits sages by undertone: Look to undertones to differentiate between hues: Gray lends additional soothing vibes, while yellow or brown pulls in an ethereal earthiness. The finder follows that split. Earthy is the third of Benjamin Moore’s own sages that lean furthest toward yellow (a CIELAB hue of 105.14° or less), and gray-leaning is the third with the least color (a CIELAB chroma of 10.7 or less); the same lines place the Sherwin-Williams and Behr colors. A sage can be both: Gloucester Sage HC-100 is earthy and gray-leaning. That is our reading of each brand’s digital color, so it says “our reading” on purpose: 29 sages read earthy and 31 gray-leaning.

Popular sage greens, with their LRV

LRV, light reflectance value, is how much light a color reflects, from 0 for black to 100 for a perfect white. Benjamin Moore’s and Sherwin-Williams’ LRVs are the ones each brand prints, read from its color service on 2026-10-11; a Behr LRV is ours, worked out from its digital color, and marked (ours).

Worked examples

A calm bedroom. Benjamin Moore suggests a sage for bedrooms, bathrooms, and any space that needs a little Zen. Choose Gray-leaning: 31 sages. October Mist 1495 (LRV 46.54) is one of them; it is the softest of the three Benjamin Moore names as popular.

A pale sage. Benjamin Moore: Choose a pale sage for a barely-there brush of nuanced color or look to a deeper sage to bring balance to your space and mind. Choose Light: 10 sages, the lightest Benjamin Moore 464 Thornton Sage (LRV 66.28).

A sage house. For exteriors, Benjamin Moore suggests a darker shade like Urban Nature AF-440 or Gloucester Sage HC-100: Urban Nature is LRV 44.14, Gloucester Sage 19.25 (deep). The exterior house color visualizer paints either on a house.

Clary Sage at Sherwin-Williams. SW 6178 is LRV 41; it is here because its own name says sage. Sherwin-Williams’ SW 2860 Sage (LRV 42.1) is here because its closest Benjamin Moore color is a sage.

Common mistakes when choosing a sage green

  • Not sampling. Benjamin Moore: sampling a variety of sage green paint colors before you start painting is a way to ensure you’re choosing color with confidence.
  • Missing the undertone. An earthy sage beside a gray-leaning one on the same wall can look muddy or cold. Choose one side and stay there.
  • Going too light outside. A pale sage on siding in full sun can read almost white; Benjamin Moore suggests a darker shade for exteriors.
  • Trusting a screen. Every color here is the brand’s digital stand-in for the paint. Look at a real sample on the wall morning and evening.
