Quick answer: on a Brick or Stone fireplace, a wooden mantel deeper than 1½″ sits at least 12″ above the top of the opening (IRC R1001.11): no combustible within 6″ of the opening, and within 12″ nothing stands out more than ⅛″ for each inch above it. Over a 30″-high opening that puts the mantel’s underside 42″ off the floor at the lowest. A factory-built fireplace follows its manual instead: 12″ for a Majestic Biltmore, 20″ for a Heat & Glo Exclaim-50.

How to use the mantel height calculator

    1. Pick the fireplace: brick or stone built on site (masonry), or a factory-built metal firebox with a manual.
    2. Measure the opening, its width and its height, and the raised hearth under it if there is one.
    3. Measure the mantel’s depth: how far it stands out from the fireplace’s face, brackets and corbels included.
    4. Factory-built? Enter the “mantel minimum height above opening” from your fireplace’s manual.
    5. You get the lowest the mantel may sit, above the opening and off the floor, the trim allowed under it and the hearth, drawn from the side. Enter your planned height to check it.

    The rules behind the numbers

    A brick or stone fireplace

The 2021 International Residential Code allows “exposed combustible mantels or trim … directly on the masonry fireplace front surrounding the fireplace opening providing such combustible materials are not placed within 6 inches (152 mm) of a fireplace opening. Combustible material within 12 inches (306 mm) of the fireplace opening shall not project more than 1/8 inch (3 mm) for each 1-inch (25 mm) distance from such an opening” (R1001.11). So at 6″ up wood may stand out ¾″, at 8″ 1″, at 12″ 1½″; above 12″ the code sets no limit. Measure to the mantel’s lowest edge.

    A factory-built fireplace

“Factory-built fireplaces shall be listed and labeled and shall be installed in accordance with the conditions of the listing” (R1004.1), so the manual’s clearance page decides. Two we read: the Majestic Biltmore SB60 / SB80 manual gives “Mantel minimum height 12 in. (305 mm) above opening”; the Heat & Glo Exclaim-50 manual gives “Mantel minimum height 20 in. (508 mm) above opening”. Both allow a mantel 12″ deep at most, trim that projects “no more than 1-1/2 in. (38 mm)” from 6″ above the opening, and combustible side walls 24″ from it.

    The hearth

A masonry fireplace’s hearth extension reaches “not less than 16 inches (406 mm) in front of and not less than 8 inches (203 mm) beyond each side of the fireplace opening”; for an opening of 6 square feet or more, 20″ in front and 12″ each side (R1001.10). A factory-built one’s hearth follows its listing (R1004.2).

There is no standard mantel height

The code sets the lowest a mantel may go, not where it looks best. Above that line the height is yours: the wall above it for art or a TV, and the ceiling, decide.

    Four worked examples

A brick fireplace, 36″ × 30″, with an 8″ beam mantel. Deeper than 1½″, so at least 12″ above the opening: its underside 42″ off the floor. The opening is 7.5 square feet, so the hearth reaches 20″ out and is 60″ wide.

A 1″-thick trim board above the same opening. At ⅛″ per inch, 1″ of projection may start 8″ above the opening: 38″ off the floor.

A Heat & Glo Exclaim-50 with a 30″-high opening. Its manual asks 20″: the mantel’s underside 50″ off the floor, 12″ deep at most.

A stone fireplace on a 16″ raised hearth, a mantel planned at 56″. The opening’s top is at 46″, so the mantel needs 58″: 56″ is 2″ too low.

    Common mantel mistakes

    • Measuring to the shelf’s top. The rule is about the mantel’s lowest edge: its underside, or the brackets and corbels under it.
    • Forgetting a raised hearth. Measure up from the top of the opening, not the floor; the floor height follows.
    • Using the masonry rule on a factory-built box. A metal fireplace follows its manual, which can ask more: 20″ for the Exclaim-50.
    • Trim too close to the opening. Nothing combustible within 6″, and below 12″ only thin trim.
    • Taking “54 to 60 inches” as a rule. It is a common look, not a code; the code only sets the lowest the mantel may go.

Your fireplace’s manual and your building department have the last word. Mount a TV above the mantel with the TV size and height calculator, arrange the room around the fireplace with the living room layout planner, and draw it to scale in the free 2D planner.

    Mantel height questions

How high should a mantel be above a fireplace?

On a brick or stone fireplace, at least 12″ above the top of the opening for any mantel deeper than 1½″ (IRC R1001.11); a factory-built fireplace’s manual sets its own, such as 12″ or 20″. Above that line, the height is a matter of looks.

What is the standard fireplace mantel height?

There is none in the code; it sets only the lowest. Over a 30″-high opening on a flush hearth, the lowest is 42″ to the mantel’s underside for a brick or stone fireplace.

How much clearance does a mantel need?

Nothing combustible within 6″ of the opening, and within 12″ nothing standing out more than ⅛″ per inch of height: ¾″ at 6″, 1″ at 8″, 1½″ at 12″ (R1001.11).

How deep can a fireplace mantel be?

The masonry rule sets no depth above 12″. Both factory-built manuals we read allow a combustible mantel 12″ deep at most.

What is the fireplace mantel height with a TV above?

Start from the lowest the mantel may go, then leave room for the TV: the TV size and height calculator gives the TV’s height above a fireplace.

How far should a hearth extend in front of a fireplace?

16″ in front and 8″ beyond each side of the opening, or 20″ and 12″ when the opening is 6 square feet or larger (R1001.10).
