Use Clear Containers

fridge-organization

Let’s start with the fundamentals – using clear containers is one of the easiest ways to keep your fridge organized.

When you can see everything at a glance, you’re less likely to forget what’s lurking in the back.

Plus, clear containers just look tidier than a hodge-podge of opaque tupperware.

I recommend stocking up on clear produce and fridge storage containers in different sizes.

That way you can corrall ingredients like fruits, vegetables, cheeses, yogurts, leftovers, and more.

Try to buy containers with straight sides rather than curved – you can fit more in the fridge that way.

Pro tip: Label everything with dry erase markers!

It makes the contents obvious and you can reuse containers for different ingredients.

Use Storage Bins for Odd Items

fridge-organization

Fridges inevitably accumulate loose items that don’t have a home – condiment packets, medicine, pet food, etc.

Contain the chaos with storage bins!

Look for small bins designed for fridges that allow you to neatly sort and organize all those food oddities.

I like to keep one for condiments, one for medicine/vitamins, one for baking ingredients like yeast and baking soda, and so on.

This makes it so easy to find what you need without searching.

Label the bins so anyone can instantly put items back where they belong after use.

Customizable bins with removable dividers are super handy for organizing small items within each bin.

Store Produce in Clear Drawers

fridge-organization

Does produce disappear into the abyss of your fridge, only to be found shriveled and moldy weeks later?

Clear produce drawers help you actually see what’s in there so nothing gets lost.

Replace any solid fridge drawers with clear produce savers or bins.

This allows air to circulate so fruits and veggies stay fresh longer.

Make sure to group similar produce – berries together, leafy greens together, etc.

For maximum organization, use small bins within the drawers to separate types of produce.

Label each bin so it’s obvious where things go.

This streamlines putting groceries away after each trip.

Use Door Bins for Drinks and Condiments

fridge-organization

Fridge door storage is prime real estate, don’t waste it!

Use door bins and racks to organizing bulky drinks, condiments, and other items you use frequently.

Stock the door with nicely labeled bins for sodas, juices, salad dressings, sauces, milk, and any other everyday items.

This makes it so easy for kids to grab their own drinks and adults to dress their lunch salads.

Pro tip: Get the kind of bins that hold individual soda/beer cans upright – it prevents spills and frees up tons of space.

For condiments, seek bins that pull out so you can easily see everything inside.

Create “Zones” for Different Foods

fridge-organization

One of the best fridge organization tips I have is to create zones for similar items.

By grouping related foods together, your fridge essentially has different little “neighborhoods.”

Dedicate shelves or bins for dairy, drinks, produce, leftovers, ready-to-eat items, etc.

Your mornings will be simpler when you instinctively know where to grab the milk, veggies, cheese slices, and everything else.

Labeling zones helps other household members maintain the system.

Bonus points if you can group items used in certain meals – like lunch foods all together.

Just be sure to allow for airflow between zones.

Use Shelving for Efficient Stacking

fridge-organization

Maximize vertical space with extra fridge shelving!

Freezers especially benefit from added shelves.

Look for shelving systems that allow you to double stack items in the same footprint.

This lets you organize ingredients and meals in an almost file folder-like system.

It’s much tidier than a single layer of haphazard containers.

Angled shelving fits around the fridge walls better than flat shelves.

Bonus: Items are tilted forward so you can easily see everything.

Store Cut Produce in Recycled Containers

fridge-organization

Don’t throw out used up yogurt, cream cheese, ricotta, or other food tubs – repurpose them for storing cut produce!

These containers are the ideal size for storing leftover onion, lemon wedges, bell pepper slices, and other chopped veggies.

You can prep produce for several meals at once and keep it organized.

The clear plastic lets you instantly see what’s inside.

And preventing food waste by reusing containers – genius!

Just make sure to label each container with the contents and date so you remember when it was prepped.

Organize Freezer Meals by Number

fridge-organization

Freezer meal prepping makes dinners super easy – but not if you can never find what you need!

Organizing freezer meals by number keeps things neat.

As you prep recipes, label each meal container sequentially – 1, 2, 3 and so on.

Then store them ordered by number so you always know which meal is next in line.

Include heating instructions and the use-by date right on each container.

Now weekday dinners can be a cinch!

You can modify this numbering idea for anything stored in the freezer – sliced bread, berries, etc.

Just label things from front to back and use items in order.

Organize Eggs with Specialized Trays

fridge-organization

If your egg cartons always end up crushed and disorganized, it’s time to get an egg storage tray!

These trays have molded spots for each egg, keeping them neatly lined up and cushioned.

Look for stackable designs that let you store multiple cartons worth of eggs.

The best trays have lids so you can keep eggs protected on a fridge shelf without worrying about spills or cracking.

For ultimate organization, label spots with the expiration date as you add new eggs.

Then it’s obvious which ones need to be used up first.

Store Food in  Bags

fridge-organization

Fruit bags aren’t just for avocados – hang them inside your fridge to instantly organize produce, cheese, and more!

Mesh produce bags maximize vertical storage and keep foods separated.

Use them for apples, limes, tomatoes, bell peppers – anything that fits!

For small items like berries or cheese cubes, use multiple smaller bags labeled with the contents.

This prevents bad berries from spoiling the whole batch.

Fruit bags are so budget-friendly and take up less space than rigid containers.

Plus, air can circulate so foods stay fresher longer.

Use Fridge Shelving for Tall Items

fridge-organization

Maximize the vertical storage space in your fridge with slide-out shelving units.

These are perfect for organizing tall bottles, jars, and other items that typically take up a lot of shelf room.

Look for shelves that fully pull out and have adjustable height.

This allows you to customize spaces for large items like gallons of milk, juice jugs, olive oil bottles, or even wine!

The slide-out function lets you access items in the back without moving everything in front.

And adjusting the shelves to fit various item sizes eliminates wasted headroom.

For ultimate organization, get shelving units with built-in racks designed to hold specific items upright.

There are slide-outs optimized for soda bottles, condiments, jars, and more.

Slide-out fridge shelving is brilliant for neatly storing all those awkwardly sized items that usually clutter shelves.

Give your tall bottles and jars a proper home!

Use Interlocking Fridge Bins

fridge-organization

Modular storage bins are one of my favorite space-saving solutions for fridge organization.

Look for bins that interlock vertically and horizontally to fully customize your storage.

The best modular bins neatly stack together like Legos.

They have straight sides and flat tops/bottoms that allow seamless stacking.

This builds the ideal no-waste system for your fridge’s unique dimensions.

Aim for BPA-free plastic bins in different sizes and colors.

Then mix and match bins to create labeled zones for drinks, produce, sauces, and anything else.

The interlocking designs prevent toppling towers of precarious storage!

Pro tip: Opt for bins with see-through windows and pull-out drawers for easy access.

The see-through panels let you instantly identify bin contents without pulling everything out to search.

With smart interlocking bins, you can efficiently use every inch of space in your refrigerator or freezer.

Customize as needed – add new bins, change configurations, alter zones over time.

It makes fridge organization a breeze!

Designate Space for Leftovers and Takeout

fridge-organization

The dreaded fridge clean out always reveals containers of mystery leftovers – but not if you have a designated space for them!

Reserve a shelf or bin just for leftovers from home cooking, takeout boxes, and anything else you plan to eat later.

This ensures leftover food has a spot and doesn’t get missed.

Use uniform clear containers in this zone so you can easily see and access what needs to be eaten.

Labelling containers encourages actually eating leftovers before they go bad!

With some planning and these organization tips, you can have the tidy, efficient fridge of your dreams!

No more time wasted on messy, overstuffed spaces.

Just think of the money you’ll save by preserving food longer and reducing waste.

The strategies here aim to make ingredients easily visible, create handy storage zones, maximize space, and overall simplify meal prep.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with bins, shelves and racks to find a system that clicks for your household.
